That's an interesting saya. I, too, bought some $30 something-or-other "katana" once for the same purpose. For a crappy SLO, it's assembly is top-notch. They even managed to brush a half-decent "hamon" and even threw in a faux-yokote. That and some engravings along the blade make a nice display. Of course, I've not bothered to do much of anything with it short of take it apart and put it back together a few times, to get the hang of the general concept prior to moving on to other swords. To date, I've only stripped one of my other katanas, though. I was pleased to find it substantial, and left it be for the most part. I'm not daring enough to shoot for the one with two mekugi, and the Zetsurin glares at me when I suggest anything of the sort, so I leave them alone. It's nice to see that even the cheap-o, crap swords are at least trying. I marked my own as a significant improvement over the level I'd bought for the same price previously. Nice pictures. If nothing else, the furniture on this one is quite nice. Shame about that China stamp.

well it's true about getting what you pay for at least now I have something to practice sharpening on that I do'nt have to worry about ruining, and I even got a sword stand out of the deal that I was'nt expecting.

Great stuff Mccainphn - I think that the real use of these swords is not really for any practical applications, but rather to learn about maintenance, strip down and working on the blade (practicing polishing, sharpening, etc) without worrying about ruining something more expensive. And hey, I remember a time when the sword stand alone would be worth $29..! While I certainly wouldn't recommend these swords for cutting, as display, experience, etc - definitely worth a look. +1 to you sir.

The stand, too, is nice. I barely paid it any mind until the two of you pointed it out. Hard to come across one of those, especially included with one of these.
I still am quite impressed with that saya. How's the fit? Any of that nasty plastic/wax/whatever that stuff is in the throat, or does the sword actually fit? I wonder how this stuff would look on a "real" sword... (granting the obviously cheap bit, especially evident in the habaki; I'll be having another look at my own for comparison to yours now...)

Thank you Paul, by the way I have you to blame for my new sword habit, I'm originally a knife guy and was looking on the net for price comparisons & I saw the destruction test you did with the oniyuri and immediately bought one, now I'm hopelessly hooked! Randomnobody there was'nt any nasty stuff in the throat of the saya, and the sword fits into the saya snugly.

Spiffy. They've come a long way, and still have a long way to go.
I'm contemplating the purvhase of a Cheness myself, also Paul's (among other members of this forum) fault. Perhaps a Kaze soon? The Oniyuri and heck, the rest of the Cheness line are all fantastic swords, from what I've seen on that there internet thing, but I'm in the market for differential hardening, so my options are limited.
Still, that is one very interesting saya on your mantis. I can't get over it. Such a draw away from the same old boring gloss black...shame the rest of the sword doesn't match (fix it~).

If nothing else, the furniture on this one is quite nice. Shame about that China stamp. I dunno about 'crap' altogether. I think these swords actually work. The reviews on swordsofmight for these swords show that people actually use them for cutting, and that they work. One guy claims that he uses one for brush cutting on his farm, and that it has handled some pretty hefty punishment. The product literature lists it as carbon steel, which is a plus, it obviously has a full tang, and the handle is held in place by two pegs. I reckon it meets the bare minimum to class as a sword. I was going to buy one myself, I'll let you all know if it really is a useable sword, or an SLO in drag.
