I wouldn't say sacrilegious, it's more about tradition than anything else. If a name speaks to you, that's what it should be, because it was meant that way for you. I wouldn't get caught up on what others do, focus more on what you value and are passionate about.

My question on that subject leans more to the idea that most if these swords are made in China...
Ultimately, though, it only matters to the owner, anyway.

I've seen swords that people have named because of video games. I'm sure having a name in something other than Japanese is the least of a swords concerns. ^_^

I'm all for naming your sword, i've named almost every one of mine (save for the Cheness Tenchi, i just call it tenchi xP) I've named the all from my first sword Hana-Hime (Flower Princess, dont ask why) I feel it really helps to make your sword feel like a part of you rather than just a tool or a weapon.
i also really like how you used your zodiac sign to help you name your sword, very creative man !
