Sorry about this topic as I am sure it has been covered many times before.
But I don't see many high level chinese swords competition?
For rapiers sabers, there is fencing, for japanese swords there is kendo. I know sport is not always the same as real swordsmanship but I think it pushes certain parts of the arts to maintain its quality.
Any good Chinese sword competitions/styles around? I have seen some youtube videos of people trying but there has not been any that would make a particular style of chinese sword shine.
And is my observation correct in the lacking in Chinese swordsmenship? I know the communists party probably greatly hindered perhaps was detrimental to chinese martial arts for many years. But I would hope at some point quality Chinese swordsmanship is back somewhere.
thanks for any help and insight.

There are two organizations that I know of trying to promote "sport" versions of Chinese Sword Arts: The World Jianshu League www.worldjianshu.org/ and the Traditional Chinese Sword League swordleague.com/Both Organizations are trying to raise Chinese Sword competition to the level of fencing or kendo.

Thank you for fast response! Those guys look like they are exactly into trying to make chinese swordsmanship up to par with other arts. Not sure but looks like for now, fast slices is what favors single hand chinese swords. Obviously it's still early. But havent' seen any that cannot readily be replaced with fencing practice yet. But hope more developments.

Also good is the SCA's Cut and Thrust program. It's relatively new and so not exactly the most populous sparring system, but the jian and dao fit right in.

Quite personally I want to know how to open up a swordsman competition for any type for that matter because I have some ideas for one though I think would come out quite nicely.
Does anyone know how to go about this? O.o

I'd strongly recommend going to a few first. During the spring and summer there's often a lot of SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) stuff going on, and you could also check with ARMA (Association of Renaissance Martial Arts). Ren-Faires are a good place too, although there aren't likely to be competitions there, more just exhibitions. Not sure about anything else, but for Japanese stuff I would suggest emailing a few schools (check major cities). "Hello, my name is x, I am interested in learning more about your art, are there going to be any shows or competitions in x area soon that I could visit?" That kind of thing.
Observe the competition, the various stages, what all they go through and what they're judged upon. Form, strength, techniques, speed, etc. Different martial arts are going to be judged based upon different merits.

Well I'll admit that can be helpful but what I had in mind doesn't fit with Renaissance as much, and I would start to go off about what I want to do but I don't want to find the idea good and steal it.
Also on the other hand some aspects of how others go about their competitions may be helpfull, for example safety and what not.

That is basically what I mean, I just gave you Ren-Fest kind of stuff as a starting point. Your state's CMA organizations probably have an annual competition... if you have one in your state; if not, try the states around you. If you live in, say, Wyoming or Saskatchewan, you may have a small difficulty with this

Alright well I don't and I might check something like that out to see if I can get any ideas or such on it that didn't come to mind before that would be helpful, and thanks for the help.
