Hello all, I was just watching my "Fighting with the Sabre and Cutlass" DVD set by Cold Steel. In it they are using Cold Steel's 1830 Napoleonic cavalry sabre, but with aluminum practice blades. It is a fine looking sabre. And is what the U.S. patterned their 1840 and 1860 sabres after, or very similar. Anyway, why couldn't you fight with an aluminum blade? It is light and quick. Or is it too soft or brittle or what? Just curious. Freebooter

I think it's that it's too brittle, which is the same problem with stainless steel, but I could be wrong.

Aluminum bends really, really easily. So it wouldnt keep and edge and you could probably only hit someone with it once anyway.

Think of it this way: You can bend an aluminum can in your hands quite easily. On the other hand, trying to bend a steel can with your hands is not so easy. Aluminum is VERY soft, and cannot hold an edge.
