A nice comprehensive list of reviews including quality of fittings, handling characteristics, and cutting ability. toyamaryu.org/KatanaShinken2006.htmMost of the swords tested are by Hanwei and out of our pricerange. They did include a Cold Steel sword though.

Nice find Adam! +1 I have stumbled on this one a few years ago, but I am glad to see it was updated. Seems that in the eyes of the Toyama Ryu testers, the XL Tori came out on top performance wise, but the humble PK XL came out as the best bang for the buck.

The humble PK XL actually held its own very very well, considering the price.
It placed 5th in cutting ability, and they tested over 30 swords...
I'm a little confused as to why they couldn't cut with the PPK XL light and such... was it because they didn't own those swords... or could the swords themselves just not cut the mats?

I was wondering that too, they aren't too clear on it - but I think that they were suggesting that the swords were only handled and inspected, not actually used - which effects the ratings (i.e. they may have checked them out in a bricks and mortar shop - but not taken them to the dojo to try them out) The Toyama ryu guys have a solid rep for their cutting abilities. Indeed, I reckon they could probably do a mugen dachi tatami mat with a toothpick if push came to shove..!
