This is the pommel of my beloved 1860 HC saber. It has recently become a bit loose, and I'd like to tighten it. I have no tools that work with this (Scissors, needle nose pliers, etc), and am not exactly sure how it fits together anyway. Does anyone know what can be done?

That's the Cold Steel model, right? Hmm... I have no idea; Kult of Athena lists it as a nut pommel and it looks easy enough to tighten. Only thing I could think of that might fit is a flat tip screwdriver, but you've probably already tried that.

Get an old straight slot screwdriver, or buy a new one if it is cheap enough. You want the blade of the screwdriver to be as wide as the slot in the tang nut. Take a grinder or a dremel and grind a recess in the blade of the screwdriver that will fit into the tang nut, and over the threaded part of the tang allowing the screwdriver to engage the slots on either side of it. You want the blade of your screwdriver to have a U shaped recess in it so you can fit it over the threaded tang and engage the nut slots. You want it to look like this But make the recess only large enough to clear the threaed part of the tang so you have some meat left to tighten the nut. A screwdriver made for tightening security screws may work also if you can find one that is substantial enough, but it is probably easier to just make one yourself. While grinding your screwdriver, dunk it in water often to keep it cool, or you will wind up with it being very soft from over heating. Grind a bit, then cool it down. Too hot to touch, is too hot.
