Thanks all I think the defining statment is "when getting another sword will negatively impact your quality of life you are about to cross the line" - Tom K Thanks Tom, this is what I was looking for. Dave

How many is too many?
An interesting question that will be different for each person. As for myself, I am not really a sword-hoarder. I keep 10-12 pieces in my collection; then as I get bored with a piece, I will sell it to fund another sword purchase. I don't really develop emotional attachments to swords - so anything in my collection is apt to be sold at any time.
Right now, I only have about 2-3 swords that I would not sell and those are an Albion Yeoman, an Albion Landgraf, and a Raven Armory Flared Type XII that used to belong to Hank Reinhardt.
So for me, too many would be anything over 10-12. Any more than that for myself at one time in my collection, then I am locking up money that is better spent on other things.

Really? I've been having this problem as well, and have been lead to belive I am the only one this happens to. PM me please and tell me more. As to the swords... well, if money were no object then no amount of swords would be too much, obvously. I'd have a castle built and in the Castle I'd have a huge training hall where my weapons would hang. Some finer bejewled weapons would be hung elsewhere about the castle as well. Being that money is an object... I find my collection can not expand... only mutate. When I want new swords I have to sell off old swords... I have no other way to afford it. So right now my collection has recently shrunk a bit.

I find that as time goes on my taste in swords change, so to avoid having a blade not being used or if someone shows a great interest in a particular sword I normaly just give them away to family and friends, being in Australia there isn't a big resale market, or not that im aware of. Hey Odingaard any chace of a photo of the (Raven Armory Flared Type XII)

When i'll have a sword of each Oakeshotte type, a celtic, an egyptian,a roman, a greek and other ancient culture i can think of, an exemple of each japanese blade config, at least one antique and an armor set then... i think... i could think to move to another stupid money spending hobby, since i'm a couple of years ( decades ? ) away from that and my wife isnt still sick from it i wont have to think about when is enough before a longtime ! Its a good thing, since i dont want to think about it !

How Many is too many? I feel like you need a good smackin' for even asking such a question  I think once you get to the point that you can't properly maintain them all, you have too many... or need to start storing some of them in such a way that you don't need to maintain them as often I have 20 - 30 around in my tiny house and it doesn't seem to be a problem. But then, I would consider other aspects of my life to impinge upon my swords before I would consider it the other way around. For instance, "Jeffrey, I think you have too many swords lying across the only chair in the living room." "You mean my 'padded sword stand' ? You're right, time to clear that old thing out of there and make a proper sword stand to put in it's place that will hold more swords." We should get together a group for the people that have to many guns and the people that have to many swords so we can do some swapping! I could use another firearm or two.

I think sword collectors are unfairly stereotyped, usually as idiots who buy useless things. This is very unfair. For instance, most of my friends in the same income bracket drive a much nice cars than I -- usually twice or three times as expensive. I drive a boring but reliable Corolla. Nobody call on them for wasting their money. Since all a person need to do is get from point A to point B; anything above a Corolla or Civic is a luxury spending a person does not need. Another example is electronics, someone's electronics (home entertainment, stereo...etc...) may end up costing as much as $20,000 - $30,000.
Even after all the sword I bought and plan to buy (which will be close to 20 swords), and even to include a custom order sword from a good U.S. smith (which will be around $3,000), I still spend less than many others in automobile and electronics. Even if you add my gun collections, I would still spend less than my friends on cars and electronics.
They made their choice to buy cars and electronics. I made my choice by buying swords and guns. I sacrificed nice cars and expensive electronics. It is a matter of choice. Why is my choice somehow worse off than other people choices?

Frankly, because you don't fit in, you don't conform. Swords are seen as something only eccentric old men buy to brag about their worldliness or their culture and history; they have no place in society today, so having an interest in them automatically sets you apart from 'normal' people. Learning to use them sets you even further apart. Collecting swords may be an eccentric past time, but so what? I'm cool with eccentricity. Besides, having swords on your wall says, to me, that not only do you care for the past beyond what you learned in history class, it also says 'I have so many weapons, I can decorate my walls with them; I am not a person to be messed with.' My mini-rant over, I'll just reiterate that it's easy to have too many swords; realizing you do is something else entirely. However, I think Tom said it best: when they start to negatively impact your life. Unfortunately, for me, at this point, that would make even one or two swords (or even knives) too many for me. My mom seems to have this crazy notion that I'll cut things up with them... Granted, she's right and I would, but, well, that's what swords do. Besides, it's not like I can do any cutting anyways; I live in an apartment complex, so I'd get arrested if I took them outside and didn't immediately put them in a car. Tatami is too expensive and space too confined to do any cutting indoors, so no cutting for me.

Heh, my mom tells me they're illegal, and they're dangerous. I've checked, they're perfectly legal as long as I don't carry them towards a public meeting. So I'm fine with waving it about in my own backkyard.
And of course they're dangerous! It's something very sharp and pointy, what else?
Gee, thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Mothers, haha. It took her a while to get used to my guns, and I have no clue what she thinks about swords yet. Nowadays I'm planning on selling off the duplicates and ones I don't use anymore to fund sword purchases. I never was one to try to fit in with any crowd, and that never bothered me.

Hey whitefeathers, we should see if we have anything each other wants. Who knows, maybe we do have some blades/barrels to trade

The answer to this is probably very individual, since people have varying reasons for collecting stuff.
For me, too many swords would probably be when I have so many of them I can't appreciate them all. Like, when it becomes more about the collection then the individual swords, and I run out of space and have to store them someplace where they never see the ligh of day. I have a brother who collects stuff that way, and I think that if I start doing that, I will have lost sight of what it is I actually like about owning swords.

Yeah, I'd say its up to the individual. Personally I think some of the guys here with dozens/hundreds of swords are a little wacky, but then again from a collecting standpoint there's really no functional difference between someone with thousands of dollars worth of swords and someone with thousands of dollars worth of PEZ dispensers, antique Coca-Cola stuff, authentic movie props, etc. It's what people do for fun...
