Hello all, I was just reading some of the older posts on the old forum and realized I needed to come over here. But i was reading one where we were talking about our ability with our swords, how we would do in a real fight, etc.. One thing I recommend is that anyone curious about fighting with sabre or cutlass should get Cold Steel's DVD called "Fighting with the Sabre and Cutlass". It is really a neat DVD set and well made with the President of Cold Steel doing some of it, but the main guy is very professionally done by Anthony Delongis. I love it and highly recommend it to anyone, if for no other reason it is just interesting to watch! Later, Freebooter

Good to see you back over here Freebooter. I've kicked around the idea of getting that DVD a few times but I can't justify spending 100USD on it. Even with the free DVD with a CS purchase, there simply wasn't anything from CS I really wanted in my price range at the time. Good that you like it though. I've seen the preview on YouTube, and it looked interesting at the least.

Thanks. It has indeed been a while and it is good to be back. I went through a divorce, knee surgery, etc, over the last year. It has been a hectic time. But as for the DVD set It is expensive, but it is very good and teaches some very deadly little tricks, grapples, disarms, etc.. Not to mention the basics. FB

I don't suppose the divorce and the knee surgery are related o.O ?
All jokes aside, I may just have to find a way to get myself a copy in the near future.

Razor, you beat me to it. The price for FSC has plummeted from the "sale" price of $79 just a few years back. De Longis is a very good instructor, honing his skills at Maestro Martinez' Academy of Arms (Classical Fencing). I have one of his DVDs from Palpable Hit Productions on the Italian Rapier La Scherma Italiana:

As I said, you that already have the DVD, what did you think of it? Something else, although I love the DVD set, and is very good and interesting and all, I can't help buy laugh at Mr.DeLongis' ade, "Payton". He just looks so funny standing there, like a little bald headed, baggy pants wearing cartoon charactor or something. No offense Payton if you see this. Y'all make a remarkable team! FB

I quite liked it, the first Disk especially. Good drills to learn and clear and concise instructions. Regardless of how people feel about Cold Steel blades i think this is a must for anyone interested in this kind of fencing.

FwtSC comes in two volumes. In volume 1 De Longis covers saber fencing basics. This is not sports fencing confined to the strip, but fencing with a heavy saber in 360 degrees utilizing the off-hand (all the weapons at ones disposal). In volume 2 Lynn Thompson dominates and takes the material in a direction that anyone who owns any of the other Cold Steel training videos would be familiar, incorporating techniques that Lynn likes. Later in the second disc (Vol 2) there is a really fun segment on sword+tomahawk vs. sword+bowie. The material moves far afield from pure saber fencing to fighting and concludes with dissimilar weapons (short, medium and long). All in all, an informative amalgam of the conventional and esoteric.
The production is excellent taking place in what looks like the Cold Steel training facility. 4:3 aspect ratio.
Volume 1 (All De Longis) o Ready position for the sword o Footwork o Using the edge o Defense o Distance awareness drills o Defense & counter attack o The thrust o Removing the barrier o Tactics
Volume 2 (Lynn Thompson and De Longis) o Additional footwork o Additional strikes o Additional defenses o Overall strategy o Identifying & creating openings o Defeating the charge o Infighting o Opposing other weapons o Throwing the sword
It's a steal at $30.

I loved both discs. I liked the latter drills about disarming, entrapping, etc.. Some good moves there. FB

DeLognis is trained in classical fencing, correct? Does he cite any sources for his techniques? Not that I doubt the guy - I've heard great things spoken about him - but it would lend authority if I know where this stuff is coming from.

From what I understand, he has studied and trained in several martial arts styles, sword fighting styels, and various other weapons. He is a master with Bull Whip also

As to the sources he uses I couldn't say, however my instructor (who also teaches sabre) seemed to like what he saw when he watched the first DVD in the set.

I'm definitely going to have to look into this, as well, given the way you guys are talking about it. I've always wanted to learn to use a saber, but I dislike sport fencing since it's not anything like real combat. I'll have to get a saber, too...

Hey Vincent, Any thing such as sabres, tulwars, shamsirs, etc will work with this type of training. But of course it is designed for a true cav sabre, as they mention the good hand protection a true cav sabre affords. As I was saying earlier, the ones they use in the training dvd is a Cold Steel repro 1830 Napoleonic sabre, and a fine sabre it is too. As a matter of fact, the U.S. based their 1840 and 1860 pattern sabres on that French sabre.
But if you get a sabre, MRL sells several types, but their standard 1860 light cav sabre sells for like $98.00 or so. And I have had like five of them. They are great sabres, well made, good blades, tempered, etc.. But they, like most repros, are not quite as well balanced as an original. Nothing compares to an original as for balance and feel and quickness. FB

Cold Steel has several of these types of DVD set out; "The Fighting Tomohawk", "Walking Stick and Cane Defense", "Fighting with the Sjambok", "Edged Weapons Figting and Defense" (knife fighting; 3 discs), etc. Anyone interested in any of these and others need to look up Cold Steel and go to their site where you can order them. I thinik they are great and very informative and all. Freebooter

Booter, I'm actually looking into the CS 1830 Napoleon Saber since I've always like the look of it and the hilt is just so much more attractive than the 1860. Kult of Athena offers FwtS&C free with the purchase of the 1830, as well as the 1796 and 1860. I'm also looking into their 1917 Cutlass, as well as four of Windlass' cutlasses and one of their sabers.
As for their other DVDs, I've been considering the Ron Balicki Filipino Boxing and maybe their knife fighting one, but I dunno about the latter; I saw a clip from it and some of it looks... Impractical and highly unsafe.
