This is supposed to be a general-use, all-purpose pocketknife, so I'm not surprised that it's not as hard as specialized kitchen knives. Hard enough to do its thing, not so hard as to be at risk of fracture in the process.
Unfortunately for it, it's too darn small (and pretty) for me to actually carry and use every day, so I can't really comment on its effectiveness as such.

58HRC is still pretty soft for that much carbon.
It's only a sort-of higonokami lookalike, what with the different tip compared to the usual higonokami. What possessed you to buy it? Sure, it's nice, but a real higonokami would be cheaper (tho no lock).

I liked the design, and wanted something higonokami-esque, but with a locking blade. I don't do friction folders. The ebony scales were another selling point. I could have had it cheaper than I got it, or I could have paid a lot more.
As to the hardness, I dunno. I don't have anything to test it with, and can't really say how the one site that lists hardness at 58 tested theirs, or if it even matters on which part of the blade they tested.
I like mine for the novelty, and the aesthetic value. It's must assuredly a good knife, also, but once I got it in hand, the reservations I had about its size were confirmed, so I don't carry it often. Much like how my Manly, purchased around the same time, turned out to be heavier and fatter than I'd anticipated, so I don't carry it like I thought I would, either.

The last few folders I've bought have been friction folders. A pruning knife, a razor, and a tiny folder. Older ones I have include a higonokami, a Svord peasant knife, and a couple of others. Probably more friction folders than "normal" folders. Mostly, I have fixed blades. Hmm. I see that Svord make a giant peasant knife: www.svord.com/index.php?id_product=11&controller=product

I've been wanting to pick to pick up the Svord peasant for a while now, but the friction bit keeps me away. I'd also like to have a more traditional/classical higo, but again, I'm wary of friction. Too many bad ones in my youth, I suppose.

This is my new busse scrapyard sykco 1311 knife. It's 3/16" thick and has a 13-14" blade that is 2" wide. It is really light weight for its size at less than 18 oz. It has a resiprene c handle. Here's the explanation for the handle www.scrapyardknives.com/handle-options/

Old thread ... but as I have no swords i hope a knife or four will do. The first is my Blackjack model five. I carried this while in the Army. The other three are some older ones. all from the 1890's - 19 teens. Thanks for looking. Andy

Those old knives are neat, thanks for sharing. This thread used to be really active, once upon a time.

Thanks for looking. All four still get used. Of the three older ones the top one is my favorite. It is a Universal from the 19 teens or so. I won it at a rifle shoot . The wood handle was mostly gone so I put a antler handle on it. Andy

I like the look of that top one best, myself. Those other two look like a knife that my mother uses for nearly everything in the kitchen. This one has a very thin, flexible blade, comparable to a filet knife. It's pretty old, hit it from her fiance's late parents, who'd had it for ages, but I don't think it's as old as yours.

I use the top one a lot as camp knife and hunting knife. I won a new scabbard for it , I need to update my photo with it. The middle one is fairly thin. It is a Christopher & Johnson from England circa 1890s , it has a horn handle with copper pins I put on. The bottom is a Russell Green River with a thicker blade circa 1890s as well. Both are taken to rendezvous and used as a kitchen / camp knife. Andy

That is neat, I like the profile. Tiny, though. Still, cool piece.

Ooh, I like what they did with the ring on that one. Very nice.
Derzis, your knife's not bad, either. Kind of on the fence on Schrade, myself. Obviously, yours does pretty well for itself.

True Random, but sometimes I take the plunge for a strange form I like. I am not fan of BK series so I went for this one - especially when my favourite length of blade is 6". And they (the makers) have the tendency to add finger choil and make a 6" blade 7". From what I understood, SCHRADE will not make again this design (buyers didn't want it) so ... in 50 years will be a relic - a not easy to find one : )))) PS I had to file a bit the gimping, to take out the coating, and make a decent looking knife from it. But sits on my hand like a champ.
