Hello everyone Some time ago I started the ''knife nuts thread'' in the old forum (here : sbgswordforum.proboards.com/inde ... read=17403). It was a thread for knife collectors and enthusiasts, where people were invited to discuss about knives in general ; those they own, those they like, dislike, ect. Overtime, it spanned more than 15 pages and visited many, many types of knives, knives producers and other subjects related to knives ; self-defense, martial arts, the law, ect. Overall, a pretty cool and epic thread IMO. So, I decided to redo the experience here, for the new forumnites and for the old ones. Here's the subject : knives and daggers, of any type (except neck knife, because I don't like them :x ). Knife producers (at least to remind some people that Cold Steel isn't the only cool knife maker out there), knife that you own, use, collect, and/or that you would like to add to your collection and knife-related martial arts. Here goes folks... I will be back later to show you some schtuff, but for now, I will eagerly wait for one of you to break the ice ¸ BTW neck knives are allowed in this thread. If you give me karma

Yay! I'd almost forgotten about this thread! I'll break the ice, then. I found this nice little knife on Knife Center the other day. It's a new addition into Ka-Bar's Becker line, which, unless I miss my guess, are very well liked and respected in the knife community. It's marketed as a camp knife and I have no doubts it would serve that purpose amiably, but it also looks a little intimidating, so it could be applied to other purposes. Anyways, without further ado, here it is: www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... ml?s=KABK5

Hey yes cold steel is not the only knife maker, having said that I have a half a dozen of them from the massive trail master through the master hunter to various sized voyagers. The master hunter is on my pistol rig, paired with a glock 36 and two spare mags. The trail master is the only coated blade I own. Both it and the master hunter are carbon v. The knives that are my " never leave home without" are a bench made folder of four finger length and a hideaway.com tiger claw. I am a novice knife maker so there always a project floating around, looking always to the holy grail of the prefect knife. I have pounded them out of mild steel, 1095, o1. I have stock reduced old hedge clippers and lawn mower blades. Even knapped them. Yes I am a knife nut, lately they have gotten longer.

Vincent ; Thanks for that link, I didn't notice this newcomer, it looks like a very nice knife. I find it a bit pricey but if it's has good as the other Becker Knives, it might be worth a serious look. I have been personnaly considering getting the Becker BK9 combat bowie myself, a similar but larger survival/combat knife.
Padric ; Thanks for sharing man, I have heard many great things about the Trail Master. I know little about the Master Hunter, but it seems like a very tough and nice-looking small knife. I don't know much about Benchmade, but I've also heard many good things about their knives. Haven't considered buying one of them, for now, mostly because of the cost.
For my part, I just received a new shipment of folders from Buck and Kershaw. Expect some reviews... If my job and the university allows it....

The Bench made was a gift. Julie noticed that I was looking more and more at folders, as the voyagers have a problem that becomes apparent after ten or fifteen years of sharpening. They get sharpened out of their protective, for me, enclosure, I'll work towards some pictures. To shorten the story she first purchased a kershaw all metal frame assisted open which with my big hands does not make it a one hand open the unlocking nub requires focused attention to undo. Then came the bench made. Bless her sweet heart she goes to the local sporting goods and asks the owner which folder he carries! Presto I have this beautiful, moderately expensive folder that opens and closes swiftly even in large hands and does not seem that it will grow out of it's clothes. I have had two master hunters and is perfect for me. One of my knife mentors said that a good working knife needs a working handle. The oal is 9 1/2" the blade length is 4 1/4". Knife nut out. The unlocking nub has to be engaged while in my pocket as it opened once and that thing is just too sharp to be opening in my pocket

I was unable to find direct links to my knives as both are discontinued. Julie has the camera, cat pictures. When I am able to get it back I'll post some pictures. My present knife project is a friction folder from a cut down broken hedge trimmer. Also I have several kiridashi type blades that need finishing mostly o1 and hedge trimmer. Ditto on pictures.

Oh a knife thread I like it. Recently i have found myself looking at CS Espada Xl. Somehow i am facinated with that. Size.. flashy... just cool somehow heh. Does anyone have experience with such large folders ? The wood mock model does seem kinda rediculusly large. As in so large its unpractical to carry. Maybe with some kind of leather sheath but the wave feature would have to work... I am unsure .. on the one hand side i want it but on the other i am leery to buy a 300 usd paper weight. wolly

Benchmade has 3 diff classes of knives, I think there Gold, blue and red box. Most of us can forget about gold unless you don't mind paying $800 (or more) for a pocket knife, the blue are made here in the USA and I believe have the largest selection, very nice knives. I have a red n690 as my every day carry knife ( made in taiwan) love this knife and can be had for $50, money well spent. Muela ( made in spain) also has very well made knives for not to much money. Puma is another lesser know brand that has some very well made knives. For Japanese steel you can't beat Mcusta or katasuni tho your going to pay a pretty penny for them. Ka nife, lol. that's so army. A little knife lore, when giving someone a knife always ask for a penny in return, why I don't know. Appeases the knife gods or sumthin.

Benchmade Golds are usually around 400-800$, though I've seen a few that are outside that price (on either end) and are mostly collector's editions of their Blues. Their Blues, as Bushido said, are the American made knives and are pretty much their standard line since they're phasing out their Reds; the Reds are their Taiwan manufactured knives, but I haven't heard of any problems with them other than patriotic nuts who scream 'Well it ain't made in America, so it's crap!' The quality control on them was supposed to be very high and except for 'Taiwan' stamped on the blade in very tiny letters, there was really nothing to distinguish them from the Blues except for their lower price. They also have a Black class which most of us can forget about as they're the Law Enforcement knives, meaning illegal for civilians in 9 cases out of 10. There's also what I like to call the 'Silver Class', which are their Harley-Davidson knives that come in a black box with silver flames on them. No matter what you get, though, it's still going to be a quality knife.

I have a couple of Korambit from KC that I love. they are lightning fast and very comfortable and secure to hold and maneuver. I hope to pick up the Korambit II model and a Kris(or Keris) dagger eventually as well. Korambit Kris dagger and my other favorite of my very modest collection is the new(ish) SOG desert daggert. this is one of the best balanced knives I've ever held. the balance point is about 1" behind the guard and it's so light it feels like aluminum. it has a very comfortable grip and comes with a well made tight locking kydex scabbard. product shot - stabbing the bottle that made the first move (I have a witness!)

Nice ! Keep it coming folks Wolbert ; I have seen a youtube review of the 5'' blade Espada folder ( ... 1&index=37). One very cool blade, but I don't know how useful it would be, it all depends on what you want and need, I guess. Personnaly, I'm sure the cool fator would be hard to beat with a 7,5'' folding blade, but I dunno if you'd be willing to pay 300 bucks for that alone. Jim J. ; Join the party man, I know you own multiple knives, I would love to see a few pics, if you don't mind Frank ; Those asian knives look great. I have been eyeing a few filipino knives from traditional filipino weapons.com lately (especially this big bad boy ; www.traditionalfilipinoweapons.com/Hagibis.html ). I also want to get myself a good Barong, which is, IMHO, one of the best chopping weapon for its size. I also like your SOG dagger. That producer makes some nice blades. I have been eyeing their fixation bowie and dagger and also their new Aura caping knife (the one that comes with a small sharpening rod, screwed inside the pommel, Rambo-style). I'm also eyeing their Sogzilla folders, especially the larger ones ( www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... ?s=SOGSP21). Here are some links for the SOG knives I'm talking about ; www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... 20fixation www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... ?s=SOGAU01

Sebastien, that Hagibis is a mean looking knife, but as far as large knives go, I prefer the look of the TFW Kambantuli: ... ntuli.html Its blade looks like a cross between a Nepalese Kukri and a Chinese Dao, which, if it retains any of the cutting power of either, would make it a monstrous chopping weapon for its size. It could be classified as a short sword, but its only a bit bigger than a Bowie or tanto or kukri, and all three are classified as knives, so I think it fits. Plus, it looks extremely attractive to my eye.

This sword/knife is one of the newest in the TFW line of products, I like it too, but the back of the blade looks too funny for me to consider taking the plunge with this particular model. However, like you said, I am sur it is one very mean and efficient chopper. Personnaly, I like very much this one ; www.traditionalfilipinoweapons.com/Janap.htmlAnd this one, mostly because I adore its fittings ; ... lwali.html

Well, when I have some income coming in, I'll be getting the Kambantuli and I'll let you know how it performs; I think the back of the blade is a secondary edge, which would make sense for a Filipino weapon. As for those two, I personally like the shape of the Janap compared to the Pinsalwali, but I do really like the Pinsanlwali's fittings. I think TFW is just one of those relatively undiscovered vendors/manufacturers amazing stuff at a relatively low cost.

BTW, if you want, go take a look at my new review ; I reviewed the Cold Steel Ti Lite, 6'' blade version ; viewtopic.php?f=33&p=7525#p7525That review needs some love and attention (end of shameless self-promotion)

If [expletive deleted] customs ever let my [expletive deleted] knife out of their grubby mitts, my next blade will be this one;
Give me my knife you stroppy sods!
Edit: sorry about the randomness, note to self: posting on the forum when sleep deprivation is two days old is not conducive to helpfulness

Over the years I have cycled through a lot of knives. Boot knives, tantos, bowie knives, clip points, drop points, spear points, clip hunters (not the same as a bowie but very similar), all manner of (*Insert state name here*) toothpicks, some Gil Hibben throwers and a Pro Thrower, and folders out the wahzoo. Most of my collection has been broken, stolen, lost, sold, or gifted in that order. My favorites among those that I've owned have been, a 4" Spyderco Endura serrated edge, a 4" Case USA Old Timer clip point, a Gerber Guardian Back Up, a Rappala 4" fillet knife, and a Rostfrei Victorinox Spartan swiss army knife (the first real knife my father ever bought me). Unfortunately, none of those are currently in my possession. This is not counting my multitools which generally suffer the same fates as my knives, but my favorite among them was the Leatherman PST II. Currently I have: These are from left to right: the Swamp Knife of Uncertain Origin (believed to have been a Frost Cutlery), a Buck 692 Vanguard w/ rubberized handle (brought for $20 US off a neighbor), and a Husky folding box cutter from Home Depot. The Husky is my normal EDC knife, but when I'm staying around home I'll use the Buck. I also own two Ozark Trail 18" machetes (I had to sell my CS 24" Latin a while back), my straight razor, some other utility knives, and a small boot dagger that is reserved for special non-work, non-fighting use. As you can see from the pic most of my knives get used pretty hard, there is a high level of wear and tear in my collection. I do not buy knives just to look pretty - they are all working tools. My current wish list is either a Spyderco Delica plain edge, or a CS Voyager 3" clip point plain edge. I prefer plain edge for ease of sharpening and polishing, and I do use an accusharp on my knives. Either one of the knives on my wish list would become my new EDC knife.

Nice little collection Liam, you also seem to have some cool blades to add to it. I heard great things about the Spyderco Delica. I personnaly would like to get my hands on the Endura, its bigger brother, or even the Spyderco Military, if it decide to take the plunge with such a high-priced blade.
