Ok I have had this katana for a long time. The tsuka on it was cracked so I wish to replace it using the cheness tsukas they offer. The nakago is about 10.5in. The original tsuka is 11.25in. I'm not sure which tsuka to purchase from cheness. The 11in. or 12in. tsuka they offer. Please help.

If you must get one, get the 12. Since they all come pre-channeled, you'll want to make sure it's deep enough.
Something else worth noting: Pre-made tsuka will never fit right, especially if it's for a sword completely different from the ones it was made to go on.

Is it a Cheness katana blade? If so, then a Cheness tsuka is a good buy.
As stated before, a pre-made tsuka may not be the best purchase, as it wasn't designed to fit your bare blade. However, the thing I like about Cheness' tsuka are that they have real rayskin samegawa, and use good cotton for a tsuka-ito. I personally have yet to see a Cheness tsuka crack, come apart, or unravel. Plus, if price is a factor, these are pretty reasonable.
If you can afford more, consider someone who can make a custom tsuka for you. Fred Lohmann was mentioned in the commentary, and I've dealt with him before regarding wrapping a new tsuka-ito on a set of daisho-- no complaints here.

I bought a semi decent practical katana, shinwa 1060 high carbon steel. I do understand about the premade tsukas being a risk since it isn't specific to my nakago but yeah I was thinking of going with the 12in. and if its a little too long for the nakago I could just fill it slightly with something. Budget wise well I'm enrolled in college so yeah I can't really afford to much. I just want to at least fix my sword.

Well I still have the original mekugi so I just have to drill based on the size of the old hole. Just out of curiosity how are the handles as far as quality because I may do my own tsukamaki to make it authentically wrapped. For instance are the same pieces full pieces or semi decent.

I own 3 Cheness kats and the handles and ito wrap are all holding up fine. The ito folds don't alternate but the wrap is tight and sturdy. The same on mine appear to be full panels as opposed to pieces. The shape of the handles themselves are OK except I find a couple of them a little narrow for my taste.

Ah thanks for the info. Sounds like it would be a good buy.
