Canadian Tire? Or your local hardware store.

Ummm, Vancouver has the biggest Asian community outside of Asia. I would try going there first. You should be able to find some really good stones there. Look for the Japanese and Chinese weapon shops. There are a ton of them.

I haven't been up to BC for years but a quick google search pointed out this shop. Which might help. Dragons Martial Arts Supplies 28 East Pender Street 604.685.2187 This store carries sticks and swords and clothing for different martial arts forms along with an anomalous assortment of other things. It's fun to visit the store not only because of the exotic wares but also because the owner is so friendly.
*edit Seems the years I have been away from BC have not been kind to the Chinatown area. I was just learning that it seems a large amount of the Asian community moved to the Richmond Market. Dragons Martial Arts Supplies or other shops in Vancouver still might have some good stones though. If not, you can look at the higher end kitchen supply stores for some good stones.

Another possibility would be a wood crafting specialty store. I was in my local Woodcraft store and was amazed by the selection of sharpening stones there...you need to keep your tools sharp after all...

Hey fellow BCer... I live on Vancouver Island in a town called Sooke. We're about 40kms from Victoria. Anyways it's always nice to run into kids from the hood. lol
Lee Valley is the place to go for good stones. I've even seen Japanese water stones at the one in Victoria. Good luck!
