I just bought a cheness Kaze the tsuka was cracked so I sent it back for a replacement no problems there but while looking at the nakago it looked to be stick welded on right at about the 1 hole there were some signs like heat discolor, funny rust and pooled steel. Does any one have any idea about this or similar thoughts to this.

Hi Joe, How long ago did you buy the original Katana? And just as importantly, who did you buy it from? There was a problem with the tsuka that occured in around 1 in 20 swords (which is slightly better than the same level as the Hanwei PPK, which still apparently has numerous cracked tsuka cores) but this was recently upgraded (references to upgrades on Cheness blades can be found here on my site) so it makes me wonder if you ended up with one of the older models... There was also a single case where someone at the forge tried to salvage a broken blade by welding it back together - which is against all Cheness policies - and needless to say saw the employee and his manager there severely reprimanded by a very upset Paul Chen.. I doubt this is the same thing, but if you could post some pics of what you mean, we should be able to shed some light on it. Personally I've handled dozens of Cheness swords and sold many more and never had any serious problems of this type, but even still, it bears getting to the bottom of what is really going on.
