You could use a dowelling down the centre of the bamboo as well, but it would likely be preferable to just mount the bamboo in the ground directly still.

What i have done to mount bamboo on my cutting stand is attach a small diameter piece of pvc pipe to the side of the stand, then when i put the bamboo inside this pvc pipe i can use a wedge of bamboo next to the piece i am cutting jammed into the piece of pvc pipe as well to wedge the longer bamboo in there and so it stays secure while cutting it, and if you remove the wedge you can adjust the height of the bamboo and then jam the wedge back in there to secure it for another cut.

So how does the beach mat stay in place? I built something similar with a 1" dowel stick and once you roll up a mat real tight a soak it it's impossible to put on the dowel. I ended up tying it to side of the dowel.

make the dowel into a spike- give it a pointed tip - I like to start tapering it from about 3 inches down from the tip- longer narrow tip will be easier to stick the mat onto, but will break easier
I added a bit about this to the OP

Makes sense, I'll do that today.

That was much better, I added a 4-5" taper to a point, beach mats when on real easy.

I found a similar thread on another forum, but thought it's worth a look. forum.grtc.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=234I really like the disassembly idea (one of the last photos) I thought it was very ingenious. Couple that with the earlier design and it may be an improvement. Just my .02

For bamboo,my stands.Attach different sizes of pvc or other pipe to the sides of your 4x4. My sensei had stands very similar to yours. Very nice.

Yup. When I do this again I'll be setting pvc pipe inside the post, and some strapped to the side, and the table posts will be smaller diameter to fit in the main post etc. Bigger legs too. And rockets, always add rockets with every rebuild.

Is there any advantages or disadvantages to having a stand with an H shaped base rather than the (for lack of a better word) swastika shaped base?

Easier to tip over in two directions. The original leg configuration gives you stability to front, back, left, and right. The "H" would be only be braced in line with the legs. In either case if you're knocking your stand around it's most likely to be a technique issue.

Was thinking of making a cutting stand. Chrisperoni's model is great but I thought that the front leg would be a bit in the way. I also had a "H" leg design in mind so I did a little 3D model of it. It's just a slightly modified design of Chrisperoni's: What do you think?

I think that is a great modification!

Ok thanks Chris! I'll build it like that then.

You have to like someone who loves dogs and swords but I think we could have lived without watching her take a poop.
