Hi everybody!
As I told when I introduced myself, I'm knew to the world of real live katanas. So the Cheness Ranko is my first sword. I bought it straight from Cheness, and had it delivered to my sister-in-law in the US, 'cause I can't have live swords shipped to Brazil. I had to wait 6 weeks before I could visit my sister-in law and get my sword.
As soon as I opened the box and removed the sword from the bag, I could notice the care of Cheness in the manufacture of the sword.
The polishing is mirror-finished, and the tsuka is very well wrapped. Since I bought another sword on ebay for a friend, I could compare the real same of Cheness with the fake one from the other sword, and the difference is remarkable.
The weight is very well balanced, and the bo-hi makes it very maneuverable.
As I'm not a specialist is cutting, the first thing I did was to test the sharpness of the blade with a paper sheet. I cut the paper like a razor, much more efficiently than my swiss-army knife, so far the most sharp item I had.
Now, to the action. I got a milk jug full with water, took it to the parking lot, and put the sword to test. I cut the jug like there was nothing there, I couldn't even feel any resistance. And as I told, I'm not a good cutter, 'cause I've had any practice.
Next, something more substantial: cardboard protection frames for some domestic appliance (perhaps a refrigerator) that I found on the condo's dumpster. They are very hard and about 3/4 inch thick, with an "L" profile. I couldn’t cut it through and through, but just because of my poor technique and the lack of appropriate support for the target. The sword dig deep into them, missing a through and through cut by just a few millimeters.
After all this, I checked the blade, and the few "scratches" I found were easily removed by a light polishing.
As someone told me, the Ranko is much better than Cheness state on their site. And for the price it is a really good deal.
Well, that's it. If you, like me, don't have much money but wants a real katana, I definitely recomend the Cheness Ranko.
Regards,
Alex.
