Rushed home to find sword length box sitting at my doorstep!
I love the initial moment of seeing a sword length package awaiting my arrival. Makes me feel cozy inside. ;D
With eager hands... and a conveniently sharp knife, I launched myself at the box with the eagerness of a child, Christmas morning.
(You'll have to excuse the photo quality, my regular camera was stolen some time ago and I have yet to replace it. So I'm using my trusty webcam. Pay no attention to the messy room, and yes, I know the lighting sucks. Hopefully, that'll be remedied soon.)
Unsheathed and ready!
Closeup of scabbard. They're attached to each other. Only a little rattling when the dagger's sheathed. With the sword alone being sheathed, there's no rattle at all. Both fit extremely snug.
Obligatory box cut with the Pinute.
And a short series of cuts with the dagger. Note: The long cut on the left was made with the dagger's long edge. The smaller cuts were lighter hits with the back of the blade. The last four inches of which are sharpened. The last 8 inches of the back of the pinute are done the same way.
Here's a description commonly used by sellers on eBay of the set.
Average pricetag on eBay $125-$140. (plus shipping)
MAIN FEATURES:
* Made in the Philippines
* L6 High Carbon Steel
* Authentic Design
SWORD MEASUREMENTS:
BLADE LENGTH: 25 1/4"
HANDLE LENGTH: 6 1/2"
OVERALL LENGTH: 32 1/2"
WEIGHT: 1lb 5oz
DAGGER MEASUREMENTS:
BLADE LENGTH: 9"
HANDLE LENGTH: 5 1/8"
OVERALL LENGTH: 14 1/2"
WEIGHT: 6 oz.
The swords were packaged decently, and covered with a very liberal amount of thick lubricant for preservation which I'm still attempting to wipe off (a lot of extra care being needed since a portion of the spine is sharpened).
Upon inspection, construction seems quite solid for both weapons and the sheath. These aren't necessarily mirror polished, but then again, I didn't exactly get these for their pretty looks. These are going to be hardcore trainers if they can get through my series of tests. The blades are quite sharp as evidenced by the box cutting. Not razor, but more than enough for my use, and nothing that a little sharpening on my own can't remedy.
My only complaint was probably with the USPS handling. Looking closely at the tips of each blade, then reinspecting the box they came in. It looked like the box had been dropped on a hard surface. Both the knife and the sword having a very slightly blunted tip from impact. Fortunately, it was minor and easily fixed with a whetstone. Had I paid the regular price for these, I might have considered contacting the seller, but I fixed it in a matter of minutes, and I got these at a practical steal.
Taking several minutes to handle the weapons, singly and doubly, my grin kept getting bigger. Both weapons are balanced quite well, with the pinute being just slightly blade heavy. Given the style of fighting I use with these weapons, it works out almost perfectly. Very agile. Lighter feeling than I expected and although the hilts are partially wrapped in a rough cord, still quite comfortable to grip. While slightly slowing my movements down as the pinute is much longer, heavier, and sharper than the usual rattan sticks, I still get the satisfying sound of blade slicing through air with a mere flick of the wrist. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm currently low on cutting supplies, I'd be going ballistic in my backyard right now.
Unfortunately my time to play with these is fairly short, as I have work I've got to complete (I took off early as soon as I saw these were delivered). Plus, I've got to go drink some milk, water, and acquire some pool noodles for this weekend's round of testing.
Expect an updated performance review sometime after this weekend!
