That looks fantastic! Dang that is a lot of metal to remove, I agree that a center spine would add to the cross though it looks great as is too.

I am working on the pommel . we shall see how that turns out. then i may come back to make the guard and pommel match
Edit: It is looking like the PoB is going to be around 5" or more from the base of the guard. How much weight does it take to move it back? Is it worth while to redo the guard / pommel to make them heavier?
Any experiences you have to share will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Steve

It looks like you're going to have more than enough metal to keep the PoB close to the hilt. Just a question, what is the total length of the tang? You gave me the width/depth earlier, but it looks like you've got 3-4" left for a grip. I'd guess it's about 7 inches total?
I'm talking to Mike over at Albion about ordering one, so it's nice to see yours as reference. How bad was the rust when you got it? He said he'd pick one with minimal rust for me, which was much appreciated.

The tang is 6" from tip to shoulder, 15/16" wide at the shoulder. I have not cleaned the blade at all. It shipped without any protective coating, just bubble wrap. there is no sign of rust at all. If the steel wasn't so strongly magnetic i would suspect stainless, but it is not stainless. Definitely a high grade alloy. Its a real stiffy as well.

Hey Steve, in regard to the POB; I wouldn't add weight to the guard as that will make the sword feel heavier and you would have to add a lot more weight to the guard than you would to the pommel to achieve the same POB. Adding weight to the pommel (or moving the pommel farther back) will give the blade better handling. I would remove weight from the guard and add to the pommel. If necessary, you could thread the pommel on rather than peening it and that will allow you to move it further back. You could then make the pommel longer with the bulk of the mass at the distal end and taper the proximal end into the grip (like a "hand and a half" pommel).

Honestly what I would do involves a hacksaw, round file and 15-20 minutes of your time. I would saw off the flanges of the ricasso and use that to make a longer tang. That should alleviate your POB issues and should give you more grip length. Also aestetically (in my opion) it would make the sword flow better.....but if you like the fantasy look of the ricasso cutouts maybe you wont agree. Anyway, I believe this is one of Fulvio's earlier blades....so it may be the Krupp steel instead of his Chrome-Vanadium steel I'm used to working with, but it shouldn't be a huge deal to re-shape the tang.....and you can keep your current pommel and cross. Dand, thats a great idea! +1. When i first looked at it I really like the blade profile but didn't like the cutouts so much. thanks for the photo shop, very helpful. that should allow me a lot more room to set the PoB where i want it.

man this really changes the character of this sword. I am really liking it pob is right at 3" but the weight is 3lb 7 oz. the pommel to guard distance is 5.25. I think that i am going to thin out the pommel a little, move the pommel to 5" even and bevel the edges of the guard

Steve, That looks great! I think that with the guard beveled the hilt will flow together seamlessly. What type of grip will you have on this sword?
Well done!

Looks great so far...what are you using to hollow out the faces of the pommel? I think that this might look great with a hockbottle grip like on the Albion Castellan i just sold. Dan

I have to say , I have been having lots of fun with this, a large part of that has been sharing with you guys and getting feedback. Thank you all.
I still have quite a bit of work yet. the blade needs sharpened and wood for the grip will take a bit. I still have to peen, grind and re-polish the pommel. I am not planning to do a scabbard, at least not right away. Then of course there are all those bottles to cut, and a video to edit. LOL

Just truck on down to Home Depot or Lowe's and pick up a hammer or a sledgehammer handle. Only a few bucks for a good piece of hickory.
