Currently as of today, there are some schools that teaches sword martial arts.
In some of their moves, they uses the sword to block/parry a sword. Wont that damage the sword leaving a chip?
are these teachings accurate when they uses parry/block??
Katana are very sharp and brittle, against another edge of a sword i m sure it will leave a small chip...and each katana sword cost a bomb to make back in the olden days.....how come parry and blocking with swords on swords were used??
i guess when i m in an actual fight i wont care abt the sword being dmg as i dont wana die...

I studied 3 different martial arts that use bladed weapons and they all parried with the edge. The only practical reason I can think of is because its better than blocking with your body or head. Some martial arts also teach practice with shield but those are mostly european arts. The chinese arts use rattan shields and the japanese don't use shields at all.
I hope this helps.
