I'm searching for a medium black hakama. If anyone has or knows where I can get one that won't cost the earth please let me know as it's hard to get stuff here in Oz that don't cost the earth.

The cheapest place I've found for hakama is budovideos.com. They sell a pair of tetron hakama, available in black, white, red, and blue, for 43$*. Now, if they don't have to be black, there's a pair of perfectly suitable dark blue ones available through e-bogu.com for 35$*.
*Prices are in USD.

Dark blue is still good. My budget is around 100 an with the Aussie dollar doing so well against the green back I can afford to splurge..

Well, then, I'd say e-bogu.com would probably be the best. They specialize in martial arts uniforms of nearly all styles.

onlinekendo.com also has some cheaper ones. I've bought from them and the quality is good. I have bought a few hakamas from Ebay too. Authentic vintage Japanese silk numbers. Very cool, and silk is very tough. As they are older i found that some of the stitching is weak so I take them to a friend who is an upholsterer and he restitches them on a big industrial sewing machine ( the thick folded sections of silk are almost impossible to sew otherwise).

I'm just saying, I bought an amazingly nice hakama off of eBay for 25 shipped. It was old but it is very nice. Shipped from japan. Doubt it was made there but it's worth looking
