what can I use to etch my blades without screwing it up the last thing I want to do is "f" up my weapons

Yeah, like Maz said. Materials are the easy part. Wax(if you're making a design) and a strong acid. I've used Muriatic acid, which is a mix containing Hydrochloric acid, and is used to etch concrete. Other than that, a container large enough and nothing to distract you. When testing, I had a nail disappear in an about an hour. To leave a blade in too long would certainly foul up your weekend.
What you can really USE, is practice. Use small pieces of scrap so you understand how long you'll want to leave the piece in for to get your desired effect.

Not sure about the effect on tempered steel, but there is also a method involving saltwater and a battery. If you go to the Armour Archive, and search salt-water etching, you may get a few results.
The key to all of these is a good resist. I know people who have used sharpie, duct tape, wax, etc, depending on the acid and depth of the etch. Lots of practice is your friend (especially if you can get the same type of steel). Remember, you only have one chance to screw up.
