i was swinging around one of my old swords and snap goes the tang clean from the blade....... (no pics sorry no camera)
but i checked the tang and its threaded but so small and fragile it was a disgrace to wall hangers even
so i was wondering maybe i should make a large tanto out of it (katana blade obviously) but i don't know maybe you guys could give me ideas on what to do with it?

Eww ! a threaded tang on a katana? I bet it's stainless steel then. A tanto would be much safer out of that material, you can cut it down nice and short and have a full tang tanto. I really want to see pics of this hehe. Good thing no one got hurt.

If it is stainless, you will find it very hard to work with, drill holes in, grind or anything else. I once considered turning a stainless wallhanger wak into a tanto, and it did NOT happen.

Are you sure it is even steel? Most iaito are made from zinc that has been chrome plated.

If it is stainless it should not be used even for iato as it can snap just swinging it!

well it could actually be carbon.....maybe its got a wire brushed hamon witch isn't all that bad looking and it can bend a bit and come to true
what im gonna do is just make a sandwich tang and wrap it in electrical tape and use it as a fancy machete with a hamon on it
should be fine...

It most definatly wasnt an iaito as any respectfull iaido instructer would inspect the tang before allowing a student to use it, if it was threaded he would throw it in the bin and probably slap you upside of the head.

If it is stainless it should not be used even for iato as it can snap just swinging it! Just being Stainless doesnt equal that sort of crappiness. Welded rat-tail tangs, and poor workmanship can. Stainless will hold together fine for swinging around, but tends to be brittle. Impacts and flexure are more likely to cause breakage.

If you want a machete they are a few bucks at the hardware store and work better than a wallhanger katana with electrical tape ito ever will. Safer too, grip-wise. This is just a suggestion, but if you aren't willing to put a little work into it, you should just throw it away.

If you are up for getting it out, and it is stainless, it would probaby make a fine knife. Maybe an 8 inch knife overall? Carve you out some custom wood handles and giver a go.

yeah its meant for iaido(or however you spell it) I'd like to know who even sells anything like what you described as an "iaito". I have never seen an iaito that had a threaded tang. any iaito (as far as I'm concerned) should be able to be disassembled and maintained as any shinken would be.
