This just happened this afternoon: (facepalm) ( www.seattlepi.com/local/6420ap_wa_sword_man.html?source=mypi)I wonder if he had it with him (in car) or if he went home, got the sword and went back to the deli. And, what kind of sword was it? (besides "samurai") wall hanger, functional? I can just see the WA lawmakers already writing up laws, for "THE CHILDREN" (tm) Arrested: man accused of brandishing sword THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LACEY, Wash. -- Thurston County sheriff's officers say a SWAT team has arrested a man accused of brandishing a samurai sword in a dispute at a deli, then retreating to his Lacey home and refusing to come out. Chief Criminal Deputy James Chamberlain said 59-year-old Michael Burr was arrested Friday afternoon for investigation of two counts of felony assault in the 4 a.m. dispute with a clerk at Buddie's Deli. No one was injured. Sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy says the man is a U.S. Postal Service worker recently suspended from his job. SWAT officers saturated the man's home with tear gas. At one point the man tossed one of the canisters back out, enveloping the street in a haze. He also tossed a samurai sword and a photo album from the second floor. The Olympian reports that officers finally climbed to the roof and entered the home through a second-floor window.

I can see the logic of the photo album. Man thinks that if he gives the SWAT the sword, that they will just go away. And he throws in the album to show how happy of a guy he is... right?

The guy threw one of the tear gas canisters back at the officers? I'd say that qualifies him as a genuine badass.
Of course, he loses this qualification on account of the whole assault thing. Glad to see no one was hurt on account of his breakdown, but at the same time I can see WHY he'd snap. Older guy who is fired from a job he's probably had most of his life, doesn't know what to do with his life now that his major driving force is gone, and then some guy refuses to make his roast beef sandwich on rye for "artistic license"? I'd have probably gone nuts, too.

He went postal. Yikes. Doesn't that just feed into the urban myth that postal workers are prone to go...well...postal. Glad nobody was hurt though. As for the sword- looked like a Highlander wall hanger.

Why does this have to happen in Washington? Why can't it happen in a place like California? Nobody likes it there anyways.

I used to work for the US Postal Service a long time ago... I kid you not when I tell you some of those guys are just a little 'off'. Its funny... you ever notice that 9 out of 10 of these crazed sword attack things always take place with a Katana? Also why in the UK they targeted Katana... because gangs there were using them as a favored weapon. What is it with you Katana fan boys? ;D

The only other sword these nuts use are those highly decorated Kit Rae wallhanger fantasy swords. And as for the UK's ban against katana, it wasn't so much because the gangsters were using it a lot, but because the Prime Minister himself was attacked by someone wielding an SLO katana. I guarantee you, if he'd have been shot, he'd have banned guns. I'm telling you, it's just something personal.

Yep I heard about this one, I live in the Seattle area and hope they don't try to crack down on swords here due to this crazy guy.
Though I do have to say it did make for a funny story. I mean where the hell did he suddenly get a sword from while at a deli? What could possibly be so heated in the deli to make one pull a sword? Of course why did he throw out a photo album, did he think the cops would see his cute baby pictures and leave him alone?
Sounds like the guy was completely unhinged and if is wasn't a sword it would be a tire iron, or a stale loaf of frenchbread, or Sponge Bob doll. The guy had lost it something serious.

I would have preferred it been a Spongebob doll. We should all push to have Spongebob banned.

What is it with you Katana fan boys? ;D I want to know the answer to this with all seriousness. Why deny the perfection of the European sword in favour of one of those..... things.....?

@herobane, it has nothing to do with katana fanboys or anything being wrong with any other sword, it is entirely a product of numbers. there are so many cheap wall hanger SLO katana out there that if you were to pile all the sword shaped things in the world together it would be very hard to find the real ones. also the people who have real swords tend to be people who have done research and are invested in the community to some extent (even if they are silent) and respect their swords as the real weapons they are, thus making them unlikely to make the evening news with their blade in hand.

I would suggest the katana SLOs are the typical ones that you see in the news about crazy idiots due to the Hollywood hype of katana being the ultimate sword that can cut through a tank etc. Also if you look at the SLO market you can buy cheap katana looking things much more readily than cheap Euro sword like things. There is less $30-50 Euro SLOs out there than there are katana SLOs. So it is just a mass market availability issue not that there aren't crazy Euro sword lovers who want to attack deli workers.

There is less $30-50 Euro SLOs out there than there are katana SLOs. So it is just a mass market availability issue not that there aren't crazy Euro sword lovers who want to attack deli workers. I don't know about that; some of my first "swords" were Euro-style/inspired wallhangers. The most expensive cost me $65. The first was $23, the second, a Conan replica (the Atlantean, I think?) was $20. It's a very big, heavy sword, that almost feels sturdy enough to used. The $65 piece was a knightly-styled thingamajig with "gold" hilt parts and a black...we'll call it wood, though likely resin, grip. It was glued tight, and never budged. Solid except the whole stainless business. Anyway, what I'm saying is, they're out there. The earlier points about the "samurai sword" simply being the more hyped are likely to blame for their...preference. Just look how many guys join here looking for cheap katana, compared to how many ask about the best type (I suck at Oakeshott). Just a thought. ...But a photo album?
