say I'm going to buy a Tinker 9th century viking sword, and the peen loosens. how would I go about fixing that myself? I'm only asking because it may help in the decision making process.

You put the sword in a vice and hit the peen with a ball peen hammer.

Or you can go the full route to make it a better sword. That involves disassembling the sword, setting the blade shoulders forward about 1/8", then refitting the whole hilt so that everything is a tight "press fit" and it should last practically forever.
I have one of the Tinker Viking swords that I should do just that as a fun project. If I do, I'll post pictures of the process.

If he doesn't, there are many guys here on SBG who have shared similar projects. I myself have mounted a H/T LS blade and posted pics of the whole process. If you like, I'll dig a bit in the customization area to find it.

I wouldn't worry about it being a problem- more like possible required maintenance. Has anyone given you an expectation of how much cutting you'll do before it becomes loose?

This might be helpful... there's a lot more about peening, just look through the sword making/customizing area, questions like this get asked very often so you can save you and us some work and read old threads.

... Has anyone given you an expectation of how much cutting you'll do before it becomes loose? It's highly variable. Some folks have been using them for a while with no problems. I've seen some that were loose when they were still new and in the factory box. And several that loosened up with 3-4 accidental hard strikes on the cutting stand. If I was trying to find out if I had a good one, I'd whack a wooden post a few good blows, making sure I had good edge alignment into the post so as not to put a set in the blade.

I'm wondering if a couple of nicely place spot welds would keep it from ever being an issue.
