Hey gang,
So I've calculated my funds and I've found that I'll be able to get a longbow without having to resort to begging on the street. Now I know that there are probably some kits out there that have an archery arm guard in them, but what I'm looking for is a pair of plain, overlapping leather bracers.
I've looked at KoA's stock and the plain ones don't overlap, and the ones that overlap have to much decoration on them for my tastes.
So I've decided to ask you guys if anyone knows of a place that sells something like this for a reasonable price, or if I'd be better off making my own.

www.By-the-sword.com has a plain leather bracer specifically made for archery for 9$. A pair of bracers, aka vambraces, would be a bad idea since there's usually skin left exposed when you fasten them.

Actually from personal experience even if you have some skin left exposed between the leather or the laces, straps etc. the bracer will protect you quite nicely from string slap. A nice set of leather bracers even if they don't overlap would do fine since the leather provides a layer (and in the instances they leave exposed skin a space) between you and the bowstring. I no longer have a need for bracers except when shooting high poundage bows that I'm not familiar with but a few shots on those and the bracers come off too so I don't look for bracers anymore. Something like these might do well for you: Attachments:

That simple one at "by the sword" is probably the closest to what I'm looking for. It also comes unfinished so that I could dye it, etch it, put some glitter on it, or customize it however I want. But I might wait until I start shooting till I decide that I need one. I also looked at the simple leather finger guard and hell, I have scrap leather laying around that I could make one of tho's out of. OH WAIT! Speaking of scrap leather, I just rembered that I have this huge piece of old industrial leather, it's like 15oz leather... maybe thicker, I forget the conversions. But it is thick enough to be a shoe bottom. Gonna go see if I can find that, then I'll just drill some holes, loop some leather cord through and bam!

Are tho's antler buttons? I was wondering about making something similar, but I thought that having anything hard on the string side might snag on the bow string and weaken it. Is this something I need to design my bracer around, or will it not matter?
Oh, and as far as the leather goes, it's around 1/4" thick and the only thinner stuff I have is 2-3oz. Which I could double up on that, but I didn't have anything else planned for the strip of 1/4" leather.

Well, nothing wrong with a little overkill on the thickness of the guard, if you don't have and don't want to buy any more. As for the button around which you'll loop your lace, they are sitting on the back or sides of your arm. If your bowstring hits those, you have more problems than bracer design. The lace is just a leather bootlace. Plenty of places you can get it. Or you can use another material. 550 cord, shoelace, twine, whatever... The stitching around the outer edges is with artificial sinew.
