Hello, First post on SBG been hanging around swordforum for a few years as Lee Luttrell, Wanted to see if anyone here has one and if they are an okay blade. I emailed CAS customer service and asked about the construction and the told me it was a rat tail tang and came only moderately sharp (which is about how this type of sword usually was) My other question as to useability was left unanswered. I was hoping someone here is knowledgeable about this sword. Thanks in advance, Lee

Daikijinlee; I have the Hanwei VOC Cutlass which is the same blade, different Hilt. Both swords come unsharpened but if you buy from Kult Of Athena (KOA) they will sharpen it for you on request. They did a good job on mine. Let me assure you, the tang is most definitely NOT rat-tail. It is listed as "battle ready" at KOA and they are reliable as to their descriptions. I have been buying from them for several years and they haven't been wrong yet in my experience. To answer your question, it's a good blade, fairly stiff but appropriately flexible, well tempered and lightly antiqued. I'm not going to tear up my hilt to break it down and look at the tang, but as I mentioned, I trust Ryan at KOA. I like the sword, it's a good cutter and very handy and quick. I think that if you're looking for a cutlass or hanger (same-same) you won't be disappointed in the Revolutionary War Hanger.

Thanks, thats the kind of information I was looking for. This is what makes places like SBG great good people with a wealth of knowledge willing to share it.

unfortunately, a trough tang (proper term), and rat tail tang are the same. here however on the forum, a rat tail tang is equated with a weld tang... where the blade stops slightly into the hilt and a shank or bolt is welded on to complete the tang. it keeps assembly labor down for pricing. no one has to properly fit hilt etc.
this is most unfortunate for those who buy swords, because they break.
it could be that CAS calling it a rat tail is meaning through tang.

I've got one of these, too. Not sharp, though. Nifty little sword-I plan to sharpen it up one day. Tried to disassemble it--nut came off easy but the rest stayed well put. Makes me think it may be epoxied together, which I think will help strengthen the whole sword. My only gripe is that the grip is a bit snug for me but I'm getting used to it. A note about the factory edge, the bottom half or so is flat but the top half narrows quite a bit almost becoming sharp. I don't know much about re-enactment requirements but I'm thinking it might need to be further blunted for that use.
