Ok so I read online that white viniger can remove rust spots. I had some minor rust on the blade of my H/T bastard so I rubbed it with white vinigher and the rust came off. Well after anbout 10 mins when i looked at the blade again one of the sides as a very new and very beautiful pattern welded design on the front of the blade.
is this ok? will it weaken the sword in any way?
Thanks John

As I understand, even plain steel will exhibit a grain structure if etched enough, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing... Would there be any chance of pictures of this pattern?

Are you sure it was an actual pattern in the metal and not an awkward etching as a result of the vinegar?
If it actually was in the metal, then there is a very good chance that it was alloy banding.

No I no longer think that because the etches went away sadly (because tey were really cool) and sanmarc I had figured because they did it to blades in the past so it shouldent mess anything up.

Yeah, I highly highly doubt it was a welded pattern like you think. That would require it to have been made with a core of twisted iron bars, which is very specific, and you pay a lot extra for. They would ALWAYS specify that the blade you're buying is PW, and I don't think any of the Tinker blades are, correct me if I'm wrong.

vinegar is a pH of 3... thus acid. it really shouldnt be used for cleaning rust... imho. a very fine grit sand paper ie 1000 and wd-40 to lubricate as you sand. the you will want to clean w/ 90% alcohol. dry immediately the use a good mineral oil or rem oil, to finish up.
the pattern you saw could me a "water mark" of sort from the vinegar. as someone else already stated. i have heard of folks using vinegar to acid etch their blade with.

yea that's why I was so shocked to see it but since it's gone I can guess that it was just a water mark that went away when I oiled tthe blade.
also sirtre thank you very much that awnsered my next question. +1 for the info.
