hmmm, I think there was some discussion about this jian before and I've heard some warn about it being unsuitable for cutting hard targets. I could be wrong though and if you decide to get it, please post a review because I'm also interested! ;D There's not a lot of chinese sword reviews on this site!

Hard to tell without good perspective such as a man holding the sword, but it looks like a light cutter to me.
I'll definitely post a review if I get it.

I always wonder what people expect from a jian. Historically, all jian are light cutters. If you want to hack, then get da dao or even a dadao.

Oh I dont know...I cut 1-2" bamboo poles with all 3 of my jian regularly. They're thicker than most of my katana.

I always wonder what people expect from a jian. Historically, all jian are light cutters. If you want to hack, then get da dao or even a dadao. I don't think so and I don't want to sound rude but I've seen plenty of reviews proving that there are jians capable at cutting hard targets. For example there was a review were the Cold Steel gim was chopping down tree branches! Not to mention all the tests that Rodell puts his jians through! Anyway, getting back on topic, the Hanwei Qi Jian is all one piece construction so you shouldn't worry about the tang! However if you read the description of this sword it says that it gives a ringing noise when lightly struck! This makes me think that either it is one of those wushu "Wooshi" swords or the blade is too thin to cut! Unless of course you want to buy it as a display, and I wouldn't blame ya! I really looks kick-ass!

I own the Qi Jian. It's a beautiful sword, but is much smaller in person than it appears in the pictures, and it's blade is not whippy, but it does have a rather thin profile I don't think I would trust it to hard targets like bamboo. That being said, it's still a worthy buy as it is a very solid little sword, a wonderful conversation piece, and has an amazing temper (I've flexed mine almost 90 degrees and it returns true everytime) It also has that beautiful ringing sound it makes when you tap the blade against something lightly. Sounds like a tuning fork. Anyways, I love this sword

Thanks, everyone.
VS, your response is what I was looking for. You say it's a smallish sword, and that's probably gonna be a deal breaker for me.
