I only know the nylon waster longswords and they're great. Much better than any wooden waster. They are lighter than normal swords but that's a safety feature and compensates for the lack of body armor. In short, they're as good as a non-steel practice swords get.

Hi Raze, we use the windlass wooden wasters at my Longsword class. Recently we've been doing some sword and buckler work and the single handed wooden swords seem to do well. Having said that, the Rawlings synthetic wasters are another option though they there seems to be a mixed bag of thoughts surrounding their effectiveness (much like wooden wasters I suppose ) In other words, you may have to take the plunge and either buy both or simply try the ol' "eenie meenie miney" method. As with all steel substitutes there are pros and cons for each.

****WARNING***** *******WARNING****** DO NOT GET THE WINDLASS WASTERS.
We had a few of them in my group when it was in full swing and every one of them splintered within one season. The Purple heart wasters ate them alive. Get one from woodenswords.com, it's worth the extra dough.
As for the synthetics, I couldn't tell you either way if their good or not because I haven't used them yet. My group moved away from wasters and only steel now so I doubt I'll come across them any time soon.
While all of this stuff is cool, in my opinion as of right now there really is no substitute for steel. I don't think you can develop good winding habits, good "feeling", and a respect for just how much damage can be done with a synthetic or wooden sword. What you gain in safety or in value you lose in learning proper control and proper placement. Mind you this is just my opinion and should be treated as such. There's plenty of great WMA guys out there who love the new stuff so if you feel it's for you after doing the research and asking your questions, then go for it. Please though don't forget to share your experience with them. Good luck and happy training!!

The Purple heart wasters ate them alive. In this case I'd say only use the Windlass wooden swords against other Windlass wooden ones. The purple heart sword are more expensive but you'll definately get what you pay for. Purple Heart Arming Sword wasterPurple Heart Longsword waster
