I got a problem i think. today i was polishing up my windlass sword of guy with a very fine brass wire wheel. the blade was coming up mirror finish....the blade was NOWHERE near even warm and all of a sudden a patch 2 inches long starts turning gold. Its also lost its shine there and is now a matte finish and feels rough compared to the rest. I dont know if the color is just brass stuck in some pitting. Im thinking of taking some 2000 grit sand paper on a block and wet sanding it but want to get some feedback first. anybody encounter anything like this?

Do the whole sword that way, it sounds very unique.

thanks guys at least you lightened my mood a bit...yeah mug I thought of that... briefly ...too, since the pommel and cross are gold might look cool. if the sanding doesnt work i dunno...maybe i'll try it. it would definitly be unique. not to mention that would make it Historcally Accurate...............if you listen really closely you can hear Rammstein losing his mind ;D ;D lol.

rofl, I NEED to karmalize ya Brass hilts were not as uncommon as manufacturers today would have you believe. They were, in fact, quite popular. I still have NO idea what this is though so... ~ ~ ~

Sounds like you brushed off the crappy coating on the windlass', and brass brushed the underneath metal.

I didn't get it as Bacchus is the greek god of wine and has nothing to do with gold?

Are you sure you didn't discolor the metal from too much heat? Steel will turn a matte golden color when heated, and this can also mess with the tempering...
