I was given a small set of carving/engraving tools lately ;D and after some contemplation, and a little boredom i finally sat down and got to work. Now, as you will all see in a moment. I am no craftsman, but for a first time engraving it's not too shabby. Tis' a shame that one of my bokkens had to suffer the brunt of it though. When tranlasted into romaji it looks like this.. "watashi no namae ha Ji e tsu shi (pronounced Jeh she') desu" Or "my name is jesse" in english. I've been studying the language for about 18 months now, and it's coming along splendidly. Though a little note to the reader: I did mess up the last character "SU" by positioning the loop a little too far to the right. It should be centered. Also, near the DE character (2nd from the bottom) there is a big engravement error because my hand slipped. D'oh! Finally the Ha (fourth character from the top, has a small.. what appears to be a handakuten, but in reality it's another error. Dang my unsteady hands.

excellent first job jesse! If I may constructively critique your work, the spacing is just as important as how the characters look. Specifically the spaces in between need to be equal. The first 4 characters look kinda squished together to look like only 2 characters. Have you ever tried calligraphy with a brush? That would really help out with how characters should look like whether it's on steel, wood, or paper. note: I can only talk about the first 4 characters because the the rest means absolutely nothing to me with my Chinese background.

Hey thanks for all your support! Redrevvy: Thanks, though it didn't really take me that long, about 20 minutes at most. I used a V shaped engraving knife, and then used an U shaped one to define the curves. Also, you should buy a set of those acid etching pens and try them out. I'm sure the rest of us are curious as to how they work. Garrettc: I appreciate the criticism. Yes, i've done calligraphy before, though it was with one of those "calligraphy" pens that have very thin metal tips. Personally, i found them to be fairly difficult to use at best. Though your idea of using an ink brush sounds intriguing. Perhaps i will look into finding some. Also Garettc, Your english is very good. Far better than quite alot of native english speakers around here (in wisconsin) ~Jesse

I tried my hand with it once but it ended up looking terrible. It takes some practise lol... btw I am a native speaker of English lol.

Hm.. well now i feel a little embarrassed, though what i said still stands. You english (regardless of your heritage) is still better than many other native english speakers. P.S. i intend to take a trip up to my local hobby shop and buy a calligraphy brush set. ;D ~Jesse

The "ha" turns into "wa" when saying it (I've been taking Japanese for 4 years XD). But still, it look very good.

Wow, very nice! And yeah, doing that to a sword will make it worth much more. I know many people who crave authentic carvings, and they would pay a small fortune for something like this.

Thanks, but i'm far from being good enough to do them professionally. This creation was merely a product of my boredom. However, i do intend to do some more in the future, possibly ~defacing~ several more of my bokken in the process Anyways Thanks guys for your support as always it means alot. ~Jesse
