Hi,
Just wanted to know if anyone has used a Gen 2 Higo. I just ordered one from Paul a couple of days ago, and wanted to know the limits of the laminated blade. Can't wait for it to arrive! Does anyone know why they are being discontinued? They seem like a pretty good deal...

I have a higo I bought a while back, I have cut water bottles, pool noodles & various garden plants that were just asking for it:) it cuts like a dream, with hardly any effort. I think you'll be very happy with your purchase. The video on Paul's site of him cutting through 8 or 9 bottles was done with a higo. There is a review of this model in one of Pauls magazines so if your not subscribed I would join up go through the back issues it was a couple on months ago I think. I think the reason that they are discontinuing it was something to do with the difficulty of making the swords to a consistent quality as its a composite blade with three different pieces of metal forged together (please correct me if I am wrong other forum users)

Reason, it takes a while to make them and since there are more and more cheaper katana makers we do not like for them to sit on the shelves long.

Ours are only made from forged 1060 carbon steel. Take a look at the link. www.imperialweapons.com/swords/Gen2/IP-025.htmlYou may be buying a Cheness brand that he sells but it is not a Generation 2 brand. I would hope they are not using the Generation 2 name. Our name is protected under Copyright Laws.

It's not named 'Generation 2', rather, it is the second generation of Higo katanas, implying a change in the manufacture of them from their first line.

Thanks for all the help, and just to clarify it is a Cheness Higo laminated katana. I will write back when it arrives.

I own the Generation 2 Traditional Katana. It is one fine cutting weapon. As you would expect it is my best cutting sword when you slice in a drawing mannor. I have done a lot of practice on rolled up cardboard. I am not trained in the Eastern sword arts, so I am sure someone who is, could make much better cuts then me. I have done some limitted pell work with the G2 Traditional Katana. I drape old clothing over the tire-pell and have practiced slicing at it. I have not posted a review on my sword review site because most of my pell work with the G2 Trad Kat has been drawing slices rather then hacks that test the tang. Given that a Katana only has 3/4 tang and the sword is not normaly used for hacking, I don't think my test methods apply. However I can tell you that this is one fine well balanced sharp cutting sword.

The Generation 2 BWT Katana are said to be some of the least known, yet best value for money Katana on the market... I will definitely have to get myself one of these someday to really put them through their paces (at US$329 they are above the $300 cut of point, but if you use the SBG 10% Discount at Arms of Valor, they would drop down to $296, which would allow me to 'legally' review one within my own self imposed rules. But as to the original question - the 2nd Generation Higo is a laminated blade made by Cheness Cutlery and has nothing to do with Generation 2. Made in a similar fashion to the traditional San mai technique, it has a central core of 9260 spring steel and two billets of 1045 carbon steel, all sandwiched and forged together as one. It's a shame because I was really starting to get to appreciate this particular Cheness blade, but due to some difficulties in manufacture keeping the price point down, it has now been discontinued... That said, I have been offering a special last chance discount offer on these to subscribers of the Sword Buyers Digest Online Magazine. Definitely worth checking out, but there aren't many left so you'll need to be quick!

xtcjerad.
Hello, fear not. I have a CHENESS HIGO second generation blade (no fuller), and it does not dissappoint. Love it. I have inspected the blade thouroughly and I am very happy with the way it feels and cuts(money well spent $189. to my door). I also have a Cheness Shura (no fuller). No expert here, but it is effortless to cut with. I believe they only come with the blue ito wrap and a non-fullered blade now, not sure. I would be very interested to compare pics once you get yours.
Regards,
Migz

Hey there,
After only a couple of weeks, my Cheness Higo has finally arrived. It also has no fuller, and the blue ito wrap. I like the fact that this blade doesn't have a fuller or "blood grove", it seems to make the sword beefier. I guess Migz is correct about only coming that way. The blade is definitely sharp! I love how sturdy the fittings feel. The blade has a couple of scratches on it, and it looks like if I want them gone I'm going to have to do some polishing, but they seem to be cosmetic. I wonder if I should polish off the acid etched hamon while I am repairing the the scratches? I think the blade would look cleaner without the fake hamon. I don't like to complain, since the sword cost only $189.99 US, with free shipping. (Which is a big deal because I live in Canada) I rate this sword high in the "bang for your buck" department. Big thanks to Paul @ SBG, I am definitely happy with my purchase. Thanks also to everyone who posted.
