I'm considering replacing the tsuka on my Hanwei PK with one from Cheness. Anyone think this is a bad idea? I know the PK tsuka will be destroyed when removed but I'm concerned about the fit of the Cheness production tsuka. Is it worth the hassle to try this? I can foresee lots of problems but what are the chances that everything will fit fine? I could order all the parts to build my own tsuka but it ultimately costs way more than a complete tsuka from Cheness. I want some other opinions and suggestions before I decide what I'm going to do.

I had similar thoughts a while back with my PPK. After much taking on and off of various kosh., I decided to not go through with it because : * The PPK's tsuka is better constructed and a perfect fit with no cracks. * The nakago of my PPK is wider, longer, thicker than the Cheness tsuka would fit, so it would need internal filing which can be a real buggar to get spot on with the tools I have at hand. * Because I use my PPK for tameshigiri I don't want a shift in the kosh. so as to make me doubt the solidity of my sword. It fits as good as I practically need. * With all the filing involved in trying to make the Chen. tsuka fit my PPK, it would probably do my blade more justice to start from scratch and just construct a entirely new tsuka to fit it. * As my PPK is pretty much solely for tameshigiri, does it really matter what the bloody thing looks like ? * As the idea floated through the vast expanse that I call thought, the clock struck Beer o' clock so I couldn't quite remember what I was doing. ( Mmmmmmm, beer !!!!) If anything I will leave the tsuka alone I think and maybe just change the tsuba instead. As stated, function is more important than looks for me but each of us is different. As the PK has an epoxied tsuka, to get the thing off may require brutal force which may end up damaging the main element of your sword, the blade. Be sure, and be careful.

Check out this hardware from Japan: www.jidai.jp/shop_parts.aspand from Chinesse www.chenessinc.com/parts.htmReady made tsuka may not fit the tang of your blade, and a bad fit is going to make the tsuka very weak. Proceed with caution. Changing the hardware and re-wrapping the original tsuka might be the project you are looking for.
