Ok, my wife and I just finished watching Kick-ass for the third time (I don't think we have ever done that before :>).. and yes, you guessed it, my wife wants a balisong / butterfly knife.
This is so funny to me as she has never even held a knife except in the kitchen. She is a good shot with a pistol though!
I have no idea about the quality of these, and I am hoping someone could give me some advice. I love her very much but I am not going to spend a lot of money on her, so can I get one that won't fall apart in the $50 range???
Hey, thanks for all the help, and if you havn't seen kick-ass.. well do!

Well, I haven't been into these in ages but once upon a time I picked up a decent little one at a gun show for something like $10, and another I got a deal on at $15. (original price was $30, booth botched an order and gave me a "refund" in the form of discounted merchandise in the same value) and while I gave the former to a friend, who'd bought one like it then lost it, I still have the latter, and it's not too shabby a knife. Think the blade is about 5", pretty sure the rest is steel. Good, heavy knife, but the latch is a bit loose. Sharp as crap, though. Dropped the lower side once and blade swung out after it, nearly took off part of my finger. What I get for moving it edge-down. I'll poke around, but I'm sure other members have more ready knowledge than me. What's probably most important, though, is whether these things are legal there in your neck of the woods. They're not supposed to be here, but that's only if one is caught, eh? All that to say, yes, you should be able to find a very nice knife under $50, but I can't personally vouch for any. I'm debating going to see Kick-Ass. The concept just strikes me as stupid, but it seems to have a certain charm to it...and what the hell I could stand to see Hit Girl in action. ...What? Reminds me of the "happy ending" The Professional could have had.

Thanks for the info random. I am pretty sure they are legal in Indiana, though swith blades are not. Pretty much everything is still legal here.. thank goodness!!
I won't say too much, but the movie suprised me.. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much, it was not normal....but, maybe I am just getting old and boring...

There are a lot of great balisong out there, and you could end up paying $5 to over a $1000 for some of the custom made. General range for good ones $50-$120. Much like the sword world with balisong you need to know what to look for. This is a cute little balisong box cutter. $5 at www.edmwi.com/home/edm/page_2006_160/new_stainless_utility_knife___butterly_style__razo.htmlThe good thing about this is you can remove the blade and still practice with it. I would seriously suggest a trainer balisong for your wife, one that has no edge on the "blade" and maybe one just like it with an edge. This is a typical trainer. Get to know the parts on the balisong, pay close attention to the pivot pins. A good example of how much variety is in the balisong world They can be tiny or giant There are a lot of makers of balisong, some from the well known knife makers like spiderco and benchmade. Here is a video from Cutlerylover on good vs crap balisong here is a video of a girl using a balisong for your wife to watch Good luck with your balisong wielding wife ;D be very nice to her. BTW I don't blame her, Hitgirl is the perfect spokes girl for balisong. She rocks!!

Like they say in kickass, its origin is filipino.
They originate from a barangay, or neighborhood, called (surprise, surprise) Balisong. Barangay balisong is located in the town of Taal (pronounced 'Ta-ahl'), which itself is located in the province of Batangas.
They say that the most respected balisong maker there is a man named Mang Ona. I own a few of his balisong and they are very well made in the old style.
Philippine made (and thus traditional) Balisong have pivot pins that are peened to the handle and thus need to be loosened by the owner. They can't be adjusted, just loosened, and need oiling to properly spin.
I'll take some pics of some of my Ona-made balisong soon to show you guys. First off though, here's mang Ona ('mang' being a term for respect, and Ona being his family name) himself showing the camrea how he opens his balisong. Very quick to draw!:
He explains that he taught himself how to open his Balisong this fast because he was mugged on a bus as a young man, causing him harm in the end. To have pulled a balisong out this fast would have saved him and his money.

It is a shame that Benchmade stopped making the model 42 (The one she used in the movie) I just so happen to have one. I was lucky to get one brand new. Look around you should be able to find a used one. Though do not expect to pay anything less than $150. Another good quality one is the Bradly Kimura. They run between $80-$100 depending on where you look.

We have brand new 42's in stock at our shop. Though I'm a bigger fan of the 51. I would absolutely carry a 51, and I hate balisong's. That should tell you something.
