Hey everybody, I had been looking to buy a spear for a long time now and finally took the plunge.
I went with the Cold Steel Boar spear, mostly because I liked the look and it was the right price for my budget.
I bought the spear fromwww.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_cart.html because they had it on sale. It was my first time ordering from the site but I was thoroughly impressed. Shipping was very reasonable and it got here insanely quick. I received it two or three days after I ordered it with just the most basic of shipping. I even emailed them just to say thank you for shipping so promptly and received a very nice letter back the next day
Okay now on the the spear itself.
It came to my house in a cardboard box padded with newspaper. The spear head itself was taped to the shaft covered is paper with two screws to attach it. The screws were a little wimpy for my liking so I replaced them with some thicker ones I had. The one that came with the spear would have probably been fine but I figured why not add a little more.
The spear head was coated in oil and came shockingly sharp. Dangerously sharp even. Ready to cut out of the box I'd say. The edge is pretty nicely shaped as well, it's not appleseed but for a stock edge still very good. The head seems very well built and the whole thing just screams to be put to use hunting something.
The shaft of the spear is thick. Way thicker than I had expected, think the thickness of one of those peperoni things you can buy to slice up to serve with crackers, well it's a bit thicker than that. I have some very large hands but it felt very comfortable and not at all too big or too small. I bet this thing would hold up to a lot of punishment. The shaft was a very attractive deep red wood, the website said ash and I have no reason to debate it. It was also stained with a very smooth finish. I can see it becoming a little slippery with the finish but wear some gloves and don't let it slip out of your hand.
After I attached the spear head I started just doing some dry drills with it and man this thing feels fast. It is light and very well balanced. I have never had any experience with any spears but immediately felt very at home and comfortable with this weapon. I did not get to do any bottle cuts but I tore apart an old crappy padded office chair in the garage and I got some pretty deep stabs with it.
The spear just feels well built and ready to hunt some wild boar or some Pepsi bottles, whatever you want.
All and all I am very happy with this spear and would definitely recommend it.
