In an effort to learn more about tsuka-maki, I bought the 'Tomoe' katana from SnA as project sword. While I had planned to completely redo the tsuka-maki with new same and new ito, I was really hoping that I would be able to use the original tsuka-core instead of having to make my own. Is the tsuka pictured below fixable/salvageable? I think split is the seam of the two halves. I would like to eventually use it to cut soft targets, but only if I can make it safe to cut with. Any opinions?

Any opinions? I would say make a new core rather than trying to fix it. But that is me and I like working on my stuff. However if you really want to try and salvage this one. If it is along the seam then you should be able to reglue it and hopefully not have to worry. Now, by reglue I mean pull it apart, sand down the old glue, apply new glue, clamp it tight, and let dry.
