Graham, have you ordered anything from this artsfeng ? They have some beautiful tsuba designs at brilliant prices, but I wonder what sort of metal they are made from as they don't seem to say ?

Hi Chop Chop, yes I have bought tsuba and fuchi/kashira from them, plus some other bits and pieces. My original avatar was one of theirs' as is my current one (which I'm waiting for) the warrior one was solid brass as far as I could tell, the casting was sharp and well defined. When I filed it to fit the nagako, the metal was yellow as if brass, not white/silver as per zinc alloy, it was also very heavy. The tsuba was certainly far better than many of the cheap ones I have seen sold in the UK ;D I'll let you know if the latest one is as well made, hopefully it should be here next week ;D The fuchi & kashira were pretty good as well, with sharp casting, but as I haven't filed those I don't know if they are brass or zinc. They were rather large though, they were made for bigger Tsuka than is the rule on Chinese made katanas. One of these days I'll get round to making a really meaty Tsuka that they will fit and have a man sized handle ;D The down side is that they post the parts and don't UPS them so delivery can be rather slow Also they have the "normal" Chinese rip off postage rates and don't give much of a discount on multiple buys BTW how are you getting on with the Fuchi for your naginata

Some of their kosh. is a bit OTT but I am liking very much some of their strange tsubas.

Thats definitely a bit weird looking I assume you want it for your Naginata, cos if the size is right that will look really good ;D Just flash it at the enemy and it'll scare em to death before the blade even touches them ;D ;D

first thanks for the sugestions on where to find fuchi and kashera. i found a place online www.japaneseswordsltd.com, they are based out of texas and seem to be frendly people to deal with. i am looking forward to the customization of my tenichi, although the only thing that has me worried is the actual wraping of the ito. any one know where i can find a tutorial on this.

new tsuka, well the basic shape has been cut out, unfortunately in the process of inletting one side i slipped with a chisel and ended up with 16 stitches in my finger ( ouch) so the tsuka is on hold for a few days. remember saftey first(lesson learned)

AH, progress. here are the first pics of the tsuba( i have elected to use the origonal as it is neww and in ecelent shape) what you are seeing is parchment paper glued to the tsuka instead of rice paper. it is about the same thickness and weight but this is more easily obtained where it live. it was attached with carpenter's wood glue as this is stronger and more water proof. not completely traditional but for the sake of srtenght i have made a few exceptions. Still waiting, i am still waiting for the tsuka parts that i ordered from japanese swords ltd! it has been over ten days now. of course they won't ship untill youre card clears. The only problem with that is i had placed my order on thursday and they did not clear it with my card untill the following wed.! slow service is not a good business trait.
