I have a few katana's (cheapo crappy masahiro's i dont mind experimenting with) with boring white same. One sword has real same, the other fake.
My question is, is it easy to paint this another colour without unwrapping the ito, and if so would you need to use a special paint?
would i need to treat the real same differently to the fake?
any tips welcome

I'm going to be 'painting' some same this weekend. Or rather, I'm going to attempt to do that. I bought some spray-on lacquer for plastics/vinyl. I have NO idea whether this will work or not, but it'll be fun to try. I'm also working on a production tsuka with same panels. The panels are already glued-in, and I don't want to try to remove them, so I'm just going to mask off the rest of the tsuka. The stuff I'm going to use basically comes out of a spray-paint-like can, so I have no idea how you would do it without unwrapping the ito. I'll post some pics on Monday if I actually manage to do it ; )

real same is leather (rawhide); dye it using leather dye and then paint it using leather paints, followed by a topcoat of clear lacquer. fake plastic same is just that; plastic. I would think a rattlecan of that Krylon paint for plastics would work just fine.

Use dye, not paint. And it's best to remove the ito.
Why are people so afraid to learn ito-maki?

Why are people so afraid to learn ito-maki? We wouldn't be if a certain dude who knows how to do it would post a kick-ass tutorial *cough,cough*... This pages.prodigy.net/tlbuck/tsuka/tsuka.htm is the best guide I've found and I get the wrapping part, but the knots have me confused. I guess I'm dyslexic when it comes to knot tutorials...

Why are people so afraid to learn ito-maki? because they know if they cannot get the ito wrapped again they won't be able to use the sword fro cutting or practice until they get it right or hire someone else to do so or, like me, they were boy scouts who could not tie knots to save thier lives

I have enough trouble with my shoelaces actually... I think its almost impossible to learn how to do it from an online tutorial. I've never actually tried though, but figure if I did I'd probably tie the darned thing to my fingers.

well Paul, I'm serious:
I recently learned that I've been tying my shoelaces wrong for um....about 12 years. Learned recently that I've been doing it sort of messed up (made the loops the wrong way and it showed....badly) so....yes....shoelaces are HARD!
