Hello all. I bought this Masahiro Bamboo katana about 2 years ago. Since then it has become somewhat of a cult-sword. And it is not even made by Masahiro. As you may know, the Bamboo came with some good, tight fittings...but it was also pretty boring. Before: So, I present: my customized Masahiro-Jinlong Bamboo. The tsuba is a Musashi-style that I picked up in a museum in the town of Ohara, Japan: the birthplace of Miyamoto Musashi. New, robust sageo. Dyed the same light-brown. I crafted the fuchi and kashira myself from sterling, and a flattened brass rod. A closer look at the tsuba... My current Daisho! ;D I'm curious as to whether anyone else has tried customizing the Bamboo. If so, I'd love to see it! Feel free to post 'em up... UPDATE Well, I just finished completely re-polishing [hybrid] the blade of my Bamboo. I also RE-ETCHED a new hamon, to make it more subtle and believable. It ended up looking really good. Here are some pics:

I like the koshirae you made. If you would ever be interested in a custom tsuba (not that there is anything wrong with the one you have) maybe, in the future, we could work out a trade of some sort.

I hoped you guys would get a kick out of the fun tsuba shot. but pay attention to my sword too!
Maybe we should start a new photo gallery: "Babes n' Blades." We could turn it into a calendar to sell for charity! ;D

I'll try a search. Found it. Appears in this thread, courtesy of Mr. Davis of Wild Wolf Forge: /index.cgi?board=forumcafe&action=display&thread=1185819389&page=1 For the lazy among us, the link to the existing website is this: www.babeswithblades.com/Pretty simple URL.

That's not bad idea. I think Therion Arms has something along those lines. We might make some money on a male calandar. "The muscled Men at arms of Sword Buyers Guide!" Edit: Actually, now that I think of it, I really don't want to see shootermike in a skimpy loincloth.

Why do all the good ideas have to be taken? I think we could do better, mind you. "Sluts with Swords" is all I can come up with, though. Not very classy at all.

Sorry to break your chain of lacivious thoughts ;D But just wanted to say I love the Koshirae you made, and was wondering how you did the hammer finish? Was it done prior to shaping or after Any chance of a brief description of the process and the precautions taken to avoid distortion? Graham.

The hammer finish was applied after shaping. And I must admit that it is actually a prestigious "Dremel finish" That is, after shaping, I used a cuttting wheel for my Dremel tool to create the textured relief. The technique: Use the cutting wheel on low speed, and 'drag' it along the surface, perpendicular to the rotation of the wheel. Apply only moderate pressure, allowing the wheel to happily "dance around," creating a random, natural pattern. Instant hammer finish. I also used the Dremel/wheel to inlet the decorative circumfrential lines. The brass decoration on the kashira is a brass rod, hammered flat, and then trimmed to shape and epoxied in place. Use a wash of ferric chloride to 'equalize' the finish. Voila. UPDATE Well, I just finished completely re-polishing [hybrid] the blade of my Bamboo. I also RE-ETCHED a new hamon, to make it more subtle and believable. It ended up looking really good. Here are some pics: Think there might be room on the forums for a tutorial?

Looks good. Don't know about a tutorial, there are already quite a few along similar lines, but everybody has their own style, so maybe. Worst thing that could happen is your thread is ignored. I say go for it, somebody's bound to find it useful.
