swordmonger7, I don't know if it was mentioned already, but I'll write it anyway....
snakes are easily killed with firearms (guns, pistols, etc...) and even air-guns. to be exact, the snake itself aids you in accomplishing it. the trick is, that when you point something long and straight at a snake and it sees it, the snake will try to hold it'f head parallel to it. in case of a gun, it will center itself with the barrel, and when you shoot it, you won't miss it. the bullet will hit exactly between the eyes, which is the most human way to kill a snake (IMHO).
sorry if all of this doesn't make sense, I tried my best to type correctly and with proper English....

Nihontoman, I didn't know that, I have an old .22 rifle that would have worked just great for that. I have a 12 gauge shotgun, but I did not want to fire it at the ground that close, and maybe get hit with dirt and ricocheting pellets Of course, had I shot the snake, instead of using a spear, I wouldn't have got to start this interesting thread ;D

I was going to say the same exact thing. Done it myself many times. And for the record, I respect all life, and wont kill a non-poisonous snake unless it's bothering the chickens. But I will not hesitate to kill a poisonous snake, too many kids around here. If you don't want to waste shot, Odins shovel method is what I suggest.

Ditto on anything non-venomous. (except stink bug ) As far as the copper heads that we killed with a hoe, they bit several of our cows and me once. The cows were okay, though the bites swelled up to humongous sizes. As far as me, it got my boot though working around the farm it could have very easily been my hand.

Shovel, axe, machete. Cut off the head, then gut it, then grill it. Tasty.
And if you manage to skin it, the skin can be worth a few bucks.
Catch it? Yeah. Right. Not me.

Killed many a snake here, venomous and non-venomous. Most of them ended up on the grill with garlic, salt and pepper. Frankly I don't care much if snakes can still feel etc. after being decapitated. They're still dead.
By the way- Odingaard is on to something with the shot shells out of a handgun. Done that a few times myself. I have to admit though I've never reached for a sword though - shovel, axe, shotgun and handgun but never a sword.

I have a good deal of success with this handy little tool: www.ltspecpro.com/sjambok.htmlIt works very well at dispatching problem snakes. And, it doesn't require any special skill set. Just pick it up and WHACK!! Hit'em in the head or close to it and death is quick and very efficient. My mom lives in a forest and has problem snakes now and again. I bought her a sjambok (the 54" model) and now she feels she has some semblance of control again. It's very empowering for her to be able to deal with problem snakes on her own and not have to call in reinforcements. She's 75 and not all that strong anymore, and the sjambok doesn't require a lot of strength to be effective. Additionally, it puts some distance between you and the snake. She's already dispatched a snake she found slithering across her kitchen floor. (YIKES!!)

Well, I don't really like to kill snakes since they eat other little rodents. I have killed more than a few though that seemed to be aggressive and/or tried to bite me. If it gets to close to the house or comes after me it has to go, usually with a shovel.
One thing that was pointed out to me was that snakes will procreate with ANY other kind of snake. This means that a garden snake might mix with a venomous snake and voila you have a venomous garden snake. Ask anyone who has lived/served in military, in say Panama, Asia, Australia if they don't come across hybrids. You just need to be careful and not think any snake is safe to handle if found in the wild. I also was shown when walking in areas snakes are common to make some noise as to not startle a snake.
Also while in Texas I did see some very nice Snakeskin boots of different kinds, one pair looked like my favorite Doc Martens.... food for thought.

I actually had a black racer that moved into some gopher holes under my house. No more gophers or moles and the snake got to be over 5 feet long.
Unfortunately, that's when the yellow jackets moved in...

Just dropping by to say I just saw the ''Snakes on the plane'' movie with Samuel L. Jackson ... Dumb, enjoyable action flick with a few absurd, politically incorrect death scenes that are funny as hell. About snakes ... Never saw one more than 6'' long outside of a pet store, must be something with the weather in the North

"Badgers! We don't need no stinkin' Badgers!" Any old western fans? Anyone?
I'm with sirtre, use a mongoose.
While I dislike the idea killing anything that doesn't really need to be killed, I imagine that concern for one's self and those in one's care trumps trying to figure out bite statistics in the heat of the moment. Some people prefer frogs to snakes while others may wish to attract snakes to clear out all the dang frogs. Even a rose is a weed if it's in a strawberry patch. Everyone's got their things. If I find a lizard or beetle or spider or whatever crawling around my house, I shoo them outside (or catch and release if necessary), but if I find a cockroach I douse him with rubbing alcohol for a speedy demise. If I had a slow, more painful way to kill a roach that would still insure he didn't wander off someplace I would probably use that instead.

Man - I remember being stationed in Texas at Fort Hood. At night the freaking roaches were everywhere outside my apartment building. Massive bastards. Stomping them was like stomping a ketchup pack from a fast food place!! Not as bad as the camel spiders in Iraq. Those were really nasty!!

For roaches, mix Windex with fabric softener. Roaches love the taste but it poisons them. And they live long enough to share the poison amongst the colony.

I love all animals, and couldnt have gotten myself to kill the snake. Unless it was a threat to me or my family. Idk if i would have killed it though, it WAS a rattlesnake. pretty dang venomous. I probably would have gone into steve irwin mode... and put a 10 foot box on it! lol i SHOULD know what to do, i live in texas i run into them pretyt much every day, but rarely in my yard. I dont know if what you did is what i would have done but i dont think it was wrong, probably
