I'm working on a custom sword and I couldn't pass up this tsuba when I saw it. It pushes the $300 limit by itself, but I thought you guys may appreciate it. Maybe I could make a mold and try for some copies if you guys like it.

That is a really nice piece hastur, I really like the zogan and patina.
May I ask where you found it?
Also, you mentioned casting, are you a jeweler by chance?

It's got real gold inlayed into it and seems to be edo period. Not horribly old, but still fairly old. It has the smell of age to it, anyone who has smelled old iron knows the smell.
Believe it or not, I found it on ebay from a reputable seller in japan. The guy is a collector and broker, very good. He shipped it 2 day from japan for $18.
I'm not a jeweller, but I one of my degrees is in chemistry. I have cast pieces in the past for work. If things don't exist doing research, you are forced to roll your own. If I have time to give it a shot, and people are interested, I'd probably use iron or copper. It wouldn't have any inlay, and it would be up to others to put any finish on them.
I'll see if I can find time to give it a shot in the next couple of weeks.

There are definitly deals to be had on e-bay if you can take the time to weed through all the crap. Yes, casting certainly has its advantages, but I wasn't aware it could be applied in chem, but then I wouldnt would I since I am a psych major. In my off time I cast as well, mainly jewelry and a spider or cool bug every now and then. In fact, with christmas coming up I am going to be living in my shop for a while. Anyway, nice piece and good luck with the molds. Im sure you will have some interest, but probably more at SFI. Cheers
