I know, I know, ::)we've about beat this horse to death, but just to clarify. I've heard some of you suggest a lansky sharpener. I see they have several kinds. Would this one be appropriate? Well, I can't imagine using a Lansky clamping system on a sword. You'd have a helluva time getting it to clamp properly (if at all) on most sword blades, so it must be another product somebody was suggesting?

Hmm could be, krieg. The Lansky site has several different kinds. I saw where shootermike and kortoso said they used a "Lansky" sharpener so I was trying to find out which one.

I've used a GATCO knife sharpening system on my assemble yourself katana just to see if the system could be used on a sword and it worked just fine, of course you have to work the blade in 4-6 inch sections so I would just sharpen the sweet spot of the katana which would become razor sharp fairly quickly using the GATCO knife sharpening system.

There is NOTHING no special sharpening rig can do that a 1X30 belt sander with a 120, 240, 400 and 800 grit belt cannot, for alot less too and it can do MANY MANY more knives and swords.

If you sign up at either knifeforums.com or bladeforums.com, you'll find mucho discussion of techniques, grits, etc. I haven't broken down and bought one yet, but I've been sorely tempted.

Start with a 120 grit belt, holding your blade at as an acute of an angle against the belt without the belt touching the sides and scratching it up, and go 2 times once on each side then again. Then do the same with the 220, 400, and finally 800 and then a quick strop on a leather belt and you will be popping hairs in no time.

I am able to get the Lansky to clamp onto my 1/4" thick knife and it can be tightened enough to it does not move while sharpening. This should work fine on a sword, however I have not tried it yet. Tip: put the blue painters tape on the metal clamp so it does not scratch the surface of the blade.

I cannot personally reach a razors edge on a blade with anything other than a belt grinder. (in other words it's really easy) However, I have never sharpened on the vertical part of the belt, which appears to be the only way you can do so with the sharpener krieg is showing. ELABORATE you vertical sharpening fiends!......please
