I'm planning to customize the wak I just bought on Ebay with different fittings, and a different color ito wrap (blue instead of black). I'd like to refinish the saya to match the ito color, but all the refinishing services out there want FAR more money than I can - or even want to - put into this. Is it possible to do it myself, and still have it look decent? The description of the original finish says it's "piano lacquered".

in a nut shell, yes. as long as you aren't afraid of putting some work in. the hardest part could be stripping the existing lacquer down to wood if you were going to stain it. chemical strippers can help. if you wanted to paint it (spray paint is easiest) you only have to bring it down to scuff. as far as getting it to look great, it all depends on the time and effort you are willing to put in. take a look through the custom section and read some of the steps people took to finish theirs.
