So is this a peen or something else? KOA calls it a peen, but I'm not so sure. I have a few Windlass cutlasses and a couple have the same construction. It looks like a ring fixed around the tang somehow.

KOA is only quoting what the maker of the sword says, so they realy dont know some times, that is a round nut on a threaded rod, so just whatch what you get from them, they do have some realy good swords, just knowing witch ones to get......Hope that helps...SanMarc.

If that is a peen, it's a lousy peen. (In the sense of looks, it's probably fine structurally) Usually a peen will fill in the whole gap and most of the time is ground down and polished somehow. Some manufacturers leave the peen "ugly" as a look for the blade, but most grind em down.
So it is possible that it is a peen, but I can see your hesitation on the matter. I'd think if it was a hex that the threads would show, even if the nut was flush.

Not what I would consider a peen, but without seeing it taken apart there is no way for me to be 100% sure how its constructed.

On the cutlasses I have there isn't the same space between the ring and the tang. I was thinking maybe the ring was like a peen block(?) and someone overground it. The cutlasses seem pretty sound. One of them is this one: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/pirate-cutlass.html. I'm not casting aspersions on KOA here--just wondering if it was a construction that hasn't been discussed. I don't think I want to rip apart one of my swords just to see what it looks like (especially not with out knowing the best way to do so).

I happen to have that sword, and it's not really a peen. The 'ring' is a nut, and the tang is threaded. The end of the tang is peened over slightly, so it is difficult to get the nut off. To take mine apart I had to grind it down a little.
Hope that helps, Alan

Not a peen. If it is, it doesn't matter. The "ring" is a nut. I saw/handled one in person, and it wasn't peened.
****EDIT**** Alan beat me to it.

What do you think of the saber?

I think it's pretty good. Normally I don't like long sabers like this because the POB is so far out (great for on horseback, not so much while on foot), but this one is light enough that it still moves well and doesn't feel overly heavy.
