I have seen many Yari and Naginata blades with red lacquer in the bo-hi. It got me thinking that it would be a cool effect do do on a future Katana project. I was wondering if it was ever done to Katana historically and if not why do it to polearms but not swords?Dose any one kow if the lacquer has any kind of negative effect on the blade?

Unfortunately, I don't have any information to add, except that this sounds like a very very interesting idea. If you pursue this, please update with pictures! In fact, I like this idea so much I'm probably going to attempt it, whenever I get some of that elusive free time ;p

Yes it was done historically, its more common to see it on tanto than it is on their longer counterparts, probably because you could be more creative with tanto in feudal japan....
It was done for a few different reasons, theres a line of thinking that it denoted rank, though it is known that they did it for a few different reasons, to hide flaws (quells any romantic notions about the perfection of the blades lol), in order to save and money time polishing (not so much at first, but subseqant polishes) and sometime just because it looked nice....
I havent heard of it having any noticable negative effects on the blades, though what happens at the minute particle level i have no idea. The laquer might not have had a negative effect on the blade, but the laquer they used in old japan was nasty stuff, related to, but worse than poison ivy. Itll cause havoc in its application state, but some people have even been known to have reactions afterits dried. The name of the genus it belongs to is Toxicodendron....
Got to love modern laquer lol

It is good to hear that it has no negative effect on the blade and is definatly something I am going to try in the future. Now all I have do do is think of a design and buy a sword.
