Per normal, I am starting a thread for any of those who may be planning on attending Dragon*Con 2010. I know of a couple of us who go and always have an enjoyable time - the Con is a treat not to be missed. Once you attend one, you will never miss another - you'll have to go to see why. For those of you unfamiliar with the Con; it's the largest science-fiction, fantasy, gaming, comic book, and cosplay event in the United States. Ten of thousands of people converge on downtown Atlanta for what equates to a monster 4-day version of Halloween, New Year's Eve, and the 4th of July rolled into one. You've got plenty of swords, armor, and period clothing? How about wearing it once in a while other than at the Ren Faire? The Con is the perfect chance to do so. It covers the majority of 4 city blocks and is completely indoors with climate control. You can wear full plate all day and not get overheated! It's also the perfect place to do alot of other things, but I won't risk getting banned - so I won't comment. We are only about a month out, but you can still get tickets (they call them memberships) at store.dragoncon.org/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=26&zenid=pkco82r8qpl9g3lt6hpj4js846If anyone else is planning on going, post in here so we can talk about meeting up sometime!

Policy is the same as faires, but a bit more liberal. You are supposed to be peace-bound, but most of us never do. In the last 5 Cons, my sword has been checked once by a security guy, he found it untied, so he tied a quick-tie on it. I cut it back off when he was 10 paces away. There are security guys and police all over, some check, most do not. I leave a leather strap tied to my scabbard so I can tie up right fast if I see someone checking or I go in somewhere where it's really crowded and I want to take my hand from my weapon. As far as axes, halberds, spears, and all go - I honestly don't know. I would think you would need some time of blade cover. Last year I carried a training blunt out of a scabbard and got questioned alot because other people were reporting to security that I was brandishing a sword. I was escorted to security where they checked to make sure it was a blunt and they sent me on my way with no further incident. However, there are tons of people there and getting escorted to different security stations everytime someone reported me would have gotten old, so I put back on a sword/scabbard.
I'd say just use good common sense. I am always extra careful because most of the people there are intoxicated - so my hand never leaves my weapon lest some moron yank it out of the scabbard. I'd be afraid of some drunk falling on a pole arm or spear on the escalator.

Gotta say Odingaard... the above discription of the event and the drunks roaming around with weapons does little to make me more likely to wanna come...

The Con begins in 4 weeks! Here is where the rubber meets the road, people. Don't be the one that misses out on the biggest, coolest, wickedest, most-deviant event in the Southeast. The Con is where you wear your swords and armor to show off what you have. Everyone that I have ever known to go to a Dragon*Con not only regrets not going before, but never misses another one. There is already a growing list of PMs of people who are definately going. Why not add your name to it so you can see what the fuss is about?Check out the above rather comical video for a glimpse of some of the scene last year. Not my video, but I am in it for a few seconds while wearing most of my 14th C. transitional plate harness:

Much as I'd love to go, I'm short on both money and time... and 2,600+ miles is a loooong drive.

Three Weeks Until Dragon*Con! Well, actually 18 days, but my scheduling here at work is off - so I posted a little late.

Me and my friends are leaving out on 9/1 to head up. We should be in town early Thursday morning. One of the things I want to do this year is visit Atlanta Cutlery while I'm in town.

They'll be open on Friday and Saturday. They are about 25-30 mins east of downtown Atlanta on I-20, but you probably knew that. I might down there on the Weds/Thurs before to see if they have anything in clearance I can add to my Crusader kit.

Without the big sale, a trip to 'The Castle' is normaly fairly dull... but if some of us meet up, we could grab lunch and chat, make it more interesting. I'll bring some of my babies... especialy the one of a kind customs, for you and others to check out.

I've not liked going there without a sale going on since I broke up with their wholesale account manager around mid-2004ish. She was the only reason I went there actually, back in the day and all.
If I go, I'll let you know...
On the other hand, why not just go to Dragon*Con? You can show off your goodies there. I know of 4 SBG members that will be there so far. Hopefully, we can get that number a higher before the day gets here. There are still 18 days to decide.

Dragon*Con begins in two weeks! I can't believe that so few people here go to this event - I know of 4 people in all of the SBG going this year so far. There needs to be MORE! It's a far better event to wear your period gear to: it's far cooler indoors meaning you can wear plate all day and not break a sweat, there are alot more people taking photos and interacting with you, the food is better and cheaper, there's a shitload more to do, and it's rocking 24/7. Think of it as a four day long Halloween party...

Costume contests, Major geekdom, free concerts, innumerable expert pannels and seminars for nearly every 'geek' topic imaginable (I got to see Hank Reinhardt do a sword seminar there the year before he died) A gigantic list of authors, actors, and other celebreties whom you just want to bounce up and down and scream like a giddy schoolgirl when it's your turn in line to get their signature. (Though Brent Spiner "Data" is an semprini in person, so is Lou Ferigno) Hundreds of shops that sell everything geek imaginable. A gigantic artist gallery (it's where I bought that Cthulhu painting that I posted in my Fhtagn topic) Trust me, dude. I don't drink and I'm not prowling either and I have a BLAST everytime I go. Not to mention I'm bringing Fhtagn. You want to see Fhtagn, don't you?

I dunno Odingaard... since I don't drink and am not looking to pick up any girls... what are the major attractions for me? I don't drink that much there because I have to drive and I don't pickup girls myself because I'm married. I just have fun meeting people, wearing my gear out, comparing costumes, people-watching, hanging out with various Con friends, and enjoying the night life. Doing what I do for a living, I miss out on the 4th of July, New Years, Halloween, and all that good jazz - the Con makes up for those. I take my vacation yearly to go. I can agree that it might not be for everyone though. If you don't like social interaction or have anxiety around crowds/strange people - it might not be for you. In short, it's a good time. How much you participate and what you do it entirely up to you. Some people watch, other people play - no one forces people to do either. I do know that everyone I have ever known who has been to a Dragon*Con never missed another one intentionally...After the first one, they freak out to go to the next one. You'd probably have a good time...

Dragon*Con Begins In One Week! Pre-reg begins next Thursday evening between 6-10pm. I always wait til Friday morning myself, but that's my preference. At any rate, you have seven days to make up your mind and exchange your information with those that are definately going. Let us know, we'd be interested in getting together!

I'm getting excited about this and I'm effectively a million miles away. Can't wait to see the photos and hear from those that attend!
