I executed a thrust on a target for the first time with my KC gladius and I think I damaged the tip. I thrust into a Pirelli tire (tread and not the side) and I swear I heard something metallic. I examined the point and it looks like I may have rolled/bent the tip very so slightly. It's hard to see but I can feel a burr. Are the steel belts in a tire that tough? Anyone else experienced this? Are Pirelli's as dangerous to gladii as clothes lines are to katana?
Anyway, what is the best remedy? Should I file off the burr away or hammer it back? It's not very noticeable to look at with the naked eye but I'm concerned about future thrusts and making the problem worse.
Thanks.
Todd

Metal against metal is never a good idea, Ive damaged more then one knife trying to cut into a cheaper stainless steel one but it resulted in similar damage to both blades. as far as repair I would imagine it depends on the HRC of the sword.

A pic would help us help you quitew a bit, methinks... but I've had similar things happen a few times and I just filed it off. However, mine were extraordinarily minor so YMMV. HTH, -Slayer

I thought about a picture but the bend is so slight, I'm not sure you could see it very well. I had my wife, the Boss-who-can-see-anything-anywhere-when-it-is-my-fault, look at it and she said it looked a little bent to her but you mostly feel it- your finger catches on one side as you rub toward the tip but not on the other side. There's no chip or nick that I can see. If you hold the blade up and look at it edgewise, it (or some portion of it) is slightly bent to one side at the tip. I think I'm just going to lay it down on something flat and hammer the point flat again. It's not a major deviation so I'm hopeful that it won't break the tip. If this is a bad idea, please someone speak up quickly! If not, forever hold your peace. I've only hammered copper in the past and don't have a lot of experience with steel. A couple of whacks should not cause a problem, right? Thanks. Todd

Don't hammer it back in place! File the tip back. Hammering may cause the tip to chip immediately, if this doesn't happen you will greatly increase the chance for metal fatigue in the future.
Save yourself some hassle and gently file it back to true.

Thanks, demonskull. Metal fatigue was my primary worry especially because it is on the point. I wasn't sure how the tip would take the bending back. With no hammering experience on steel, I was even more apprehensive. The metal must be flexible if striking the steel belts in the tire bent it. Crud. I didn't want to lose metal by filing.

Instead of a file, just use a light sharpening stone. It will take a little longer to get it out, but will end up without file marks and such.

For quick touchups use Jewler's files. A whole set of cheap ones runs about $5 and they'll last for years on small fixes.

Gentleman,
Thanks. I got out the jeweler's files and took care of the problem. It was much less of a problem than I originally thought. It felt worse than it actually was. The center ridge of the sword doesn't exactly go down the"center" so the tip wasn't symmetrical to begin with and the change is not even noticeable. It looks fine. Glad I posted before trying anything.

Oh, and to answer your question about tires. Yes, there's metal in the tread part, so don't stab there. If you want to continue to stab the tire, stab into the side wall where there it no metal.
