Ok so I bought the Henry the V Sword from KoA for a supper cheap price of 109$ with 11.73$ for shipping which put the overall price of the piece at 121.68$ with tax included. I ordered it on Jul, 20, 2010 at 12:25 PM and it arrived on my door step at July, 22, 2010 at 1:24 PM witch in my book is extremely fast shipping based on other things that i've ordered.
OverView and Historical Precedent
This is a copy of the sword that hangs over Henry V tomb in Westminster Abby located in London, England. This cut-and-thrust style sword was dated to be made prior to 1422 which means that it could very well have been the sword used by the King at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. This style of sword was designed for a greater thrusting capability to puncture plate armor but with enough cutting power to still be able to give strong cuts against non-armored opponents. This is the best all around sword for both cutting and thrusting power.
Specs
These are also directly from the KoA web site.
Overall Length: 34 1/8'' Blade; 27 1/4''
Weight: 2 lb 14.6 oz
Edge: Moderately Sharp
P.O.B.: 3 3/8''
Thickness: 6.3 mm - 4.5 mm
Width: 46 mm
Grip Length: 3 5/8''
Pommel: Peened
The Blade
The blade came moderately sharp out of the box with a rather large secondary bevel. However, the risers running down the length of the blade are straight and even.
The ricosso is blunt and not very attractive and very non-historically accurate. and the blade ends in a extremely sharp point that is maybe the best part of the hole blade.
Furniture
The Guard
The Guard is very close if not exactly like the original. The hole in it for the blade is very tight and there seems to be no movement. Over time the slot has come loose and when struck forcibly with something then the guard has space to shift causing a rattling sound. Over all this is one of my favorite aspects of the sword.
Handle
The Hande is simple with a wood core wrapped in some form of faux leather with two meatel peices in between the handle and the guard and pommel. It is perfectly long enough for one hand but with a little extra room plus the pommel so that it can be held in two hands for a super powerful death stroke .
The Pommel
The pommel is a simple round shape vaguely simillar to the original and even though it is attractive it is not very historically accurate. As stated before it is comfortable to place a hand partly around and it is quite large and heavy which is perfect to ballance out the wide heavy blade. The pommel is peened ontightly, after continued use I have been able to feel a slight amount of shift in the pommel from side to side this could be because of a bending in the tang, and the hammer marks can be scene from where the tang was hammered down.
Scabbard
- Performance
The sword handles vary well with excellent point control and because if its lightness and the size of the pommel it has amazing recovery time.
-Cutting
The fun part
I will have a video up soon and that should tell everything that needs to be known about the way this beast cuts.
Conclusion
This is a seriously awesome sword for the price that it is at. It is very historically accurate with only a few minor flaws. Once I correct the secondary bevel and the sharpness I have a feeling that this will be a excellent cutter. I recommend it to everyone who wants a cheap sword as long as they don't mind doing some sharpening.
Pros
Great Price (109$ on KoA)
Historically accurate (few minor flaws)
Cons
Secondary Bevel
Looseness in the hilt (possibly caused by a bent tang)
guard in cross sightly to big for the blade
pommel is peened on (some like this others, like me, do not)
Hope everyone enjoys reading
The best to all of you
