Hello all, just purchased a new sword last week and I am already seeing the warning signs of the redox reaction with the carbon steel. Since I am new to this I am wary of putting some sandpaper to my new nice blade. Does anyone know of a good rust removal compount for very light rust?

Mothers mag will remove very very light rust. As well as give you a very nice mirror polish.

Hey I was turned on to a product that one of my dealers sells. Its called a rust eraser. I saw it in action and was quite impressed. Silvermane is the company that sells them.

Mothers Mag is ok, however it depends on the level of polish on your sword.
If the blade came in a fine polish, you don't want to use an abrasive unless absolutely necessary.
If all you are seeing is oxidation on the surface, I would suggest using Noxon, it is a non-abrasive cleaner for metals, and will remove oxidation without harming the polish.

Hi all! One of my old Iaido sempai has showned me a really cool method of removing rust from a sword : - Mix cigarette ash with a few drops of lemon juice (from a fresh lemon) just to get it wet, then dip a rag or a napkin (or toilet paper ) in it and just rub as hard as you can until the rust disappears. (and please watch youre fingers) After it you must rub the blade with clean rag to get the excess stuff off and then do a alcohol/powder ball rub (to be on a safe side). It would not mess up the finish like the unprofessional sanding does, it reacts with rust quite good (you just got to put a little elbow grease in it) and polishes the blade up a bit too. I tried it on my 1060 TH blade that got a bit rusted because of the negligence, and it worked great. It sounds a bit alchemical but it works and it's allegedly traditional (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong with this). Did not had a chance to try it on a blade with hamon thou... p.s. sorry about bad english
