Does anyone own this sword? atlantacutlery.com/p-1162-russian-kindjal.aspxI've been eyeing it for a long time now but something tells me I'll either love it or hate it and I would like to get some opinions on it before comitting to a purchase, or more likely a custom piece based on the kindjal.

Looks alright from the price they are selling at.

For $70 you can't really mess up. But the "Factory Edge" always gets me. You can never tell what that really is. Plus the sharpened version may or may not be a secondary bevel.
Then again, I have no idea how a Kendjal is suppossed to be.

Don't buy it from there; you can get it from Kult of Athena for $50. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=400318&name=Russian+KindjalAs for the quality, I've heard some good things, no complaints, except that the brass protrusion on the side of the grip is uncomfortable. I'd suggest grinding it off, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, it'll be well worth the $, from what I know. I plan on getting 2 sometime in the far future, but it's only 'far future' because there are so many stupid-awesome swords coming out from VA, lol. Hope this helps! ;D -Slayer

Yeah, my thoughts exactly! ;D I've found it as low as $35, but that was from a site that I hadn't heard of, so I just listed KoA as it's the lowest priced reputable dealer. I bet if you looked around, you could find it cheaper and get KoA to price match the cheaper site, though. -Slayer

Well my plan was, if someone owned one, was to see if they'd let me borrow it for a few days so I could see how it felt in my hands. If I liked the weight, balance, etc then I would have a pair of custom ones made from one of our great swordsmiths MINUS those protruding brass knobs of course.

I have one and it seems a good and solid piece. I'm pretty much a layman but it has a good feel to it, all the hardware is tight and it seems well put together. But, the brass knobs on the side are annoying and interfere with gripping it.
The knobs do look like they are caps however, there is a gap along the bottom edge and I can see a brass circle like on the other side where the pin is. The cap wouldn't come off to gentle prying with a screwdriver, I'll try better tools tomorrow and let you know if I have any luck.

I'd been quite taken by this thing, myself, at one point...but I have never been comfortable enough with Windlass/Atlantic Cutlery/and co. to shell out the cash for...just about anything they offer.
Donald, did you get yours sharpened? How's the edge? Any chance of photos?

No luck on popping off the cap. I tried hammering a screw driver in the gap and prying it off but it wouldn't budge. I didn't get mine sharpened. The caps are about 5/8" dia and a little more than half an inch high.

Unlike the similar Windlass Qama, the Kindjal's nubs are far enough away that you can get a comfortable grip on it. At least compared tot he Qama. It has been quite awhile since I have held the Windlass Kindjal, but I do remember it being quite comfy and my grandpa thought so, too. And his hands are huge.

...let me borrow it for a few days so I could see how it felt in my hands. Yeah, that friend is KultofAthena. Because if there was a forum member who had one, I'd assume you'd pay for shipping both ways right? Well KoA has a 45, no questions asked return policy. I once got a mortuary hilt from them and returned it, and I quote, "Eh, it just didn't fit right in my hand." The person at KOA was like "Cool, here's the return code that you'll need to print out and ship it back with the sword" No hassle. So as long as you were gonna pay for shipping both ways, I'd still go with KoA
