Hi All. The hilt / scabbard furniture on the Hanwei swords must be some stainless alloy, as acids have no effect at all on the shiny surface. Can anyone suggest how one might give a blue, or brown finish to this metal to give an antiqued appearance??? Perhaps it is lacquered, does anyone know? Or some nickel plate?? I found this link helpful for blueing and browning recipes. Basically it seems sulfur gives the browning effect. www.geocities.com/thorvin.geo/browning_and_blueing_of_guns_and.htmThanks people.

I've been looking for something too. I'd like to change the look of my William Marshall, but those fittings won't work with me ;D Somebody gave me a link for some stainless steel bluing once, but I've lost it. If I get it again i'll let you know.

I have sent an email to CAS to see if they can offer a suggestion. I'll post the answer here: Edit - Answer from CAS "The hilt furniture is stainless steel, so normal antiquing methods won't work. Hanwei has a way of doing it but they do not release this information. You might want to check with a local gun store as they may well have a product for bluing stainless steel."
I have had a search and saw a similar question on another forum about SS bolt heads. They suggested attacking them with a blow torch, also coating in linseed oil and baking at high temp till burnt.
Neither is practical as I can't disassemble the sword.

Brenno,
You may have already checked here since I provided this link the the Brass Into Black thread that you responded to. I have not used any of this info but it might be a good place to start. I have the link in the Metal Work section of my Katana Customization Links post in this section of the forum. I am not sure if it will assist you or not. Perhaps you will have to sand down the existing finish to get to "bare" metal prior to trying an antiquing method.

Brenno,
The Hanwei hilt furniture is real, honest-to-God stainless steel. Non-magnetic and all. Getting it to oxidize will be really hard, especially without damaging the blade.
